Editorial Reviews

Review

If you can only afford one "machine quilting" guide book, then let it be this one. Author takes you through every step of machine quilting. A must read BEFORE you quilt that top! Great for the beginner and experienced quilter as well. Tips and techniques throughout; Diane leaves nothing to question. Read about "plowing through a brick wall" or why you get "bird's nest" under your stitching...-A. Spragg

This book is written for quilting on a domestic machine, but I just purchased a long-arm and this is my absolute favorite book.

This book is very informative! I have Gaudynski's Guide to Machine Quilting, which is good. This one is even better. There are many pictures that show the quilting close up. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in quilting a full size quilt on a regular sewing machine.

i hope to one day see at least one of diane gaudynski's quilts in person. until then, i have her two books for inspiration.

this woman's quilting designs are the last word in elegance, beauty and skill. her books provide everything a quilter needs to create a masterpiece--including the confidence to try.

the author's writing style is clear and amusing. reading the instructions is as enjoyable as following them. she encourages her readers to develop their skills to their greatest extent.

the photos of her work (and cats!) and the diagrams are detailed and clear.

this title stands on its own, though her other book is equally worth owning. either or both belong in every quilter's library, because, even though she quilts by machine, her design ideas are adaptable to hand quilting.

I must have at least 30 books alone on just quilting designs. This is more than that though. It explains everything, or almost everything, you would need to know about quilting your designs on your quilt. I don't know what I did without it. I do know my free motion quilting has improved greatly and I keep it right by my machine. The only quilter that comes close to Diane is Sharon Schamber. Both are just wonders in my book. Thanks so much for writing this.

This is an excellent Quilter's resource!! Clear concise explanations. Beautiful photography demonstrating technique, and Diane Gaudynski's friendly down to earth attitude make this book a joy to read.

This book takes you far beyond the basics. I've been machine quilting for a number of years and I learned a lot from this book. Well worth while! Lots of photos clearly showing each topic.

I purchased this book after reading all the stellar reviews here but was very disappointed in the actual product. There are lots of photos in the book showing her beautiful quilting, but very little in the way of actual hands-on directions on how to achieve those results. I consider myself an experienced free motion quilter, yet find the lack of "step-by-step" guidance that I was expecting very frustrating. I had been hoping for more quilting details, maybe even drawings that show directional arrows, especially for creating the fabulous feathers shown throughout the book. Don't buy this book if you are a beginner, you will never be able to figure anything out! You are better off purchasing a DVD that shows you "how-to" steps in video format, or go on You Tube and find some free motion quilting videos for free!

Being relatively new to quilting, I selected this book expecting from the title that it would provide instructions, guides and other tools to help me acquire and improve my quilting skills. I was terribly disappointed, however! Beautiful as the pictures are, and as personable as the author attempts to be, everything in the book is free motion, free form and described rather than shown. There are no templates, no guides for planning use of space, no sizing guidelines or any other concrete, applicable tools. There are some lovely pictures of her finished work, but they are no more helpful to someone trying to learn technique than going to an art gallery and staring at Van Gogh in expectation that doing so will enable you to paint the way he did.

I also found the suggestions unrealistic or unhelpful; the author answers specific questions (i.e. do I need to roll excess portions of my quilt tightly to fit it through my machine while quilting - ans: no) but fails to address or assist with related frustrations (i.e. a queen sized quilt with heavy batting can be massively heavy, so how does one balance it sufficiently to focus on one small square without constant tugging, stretching or pulling) at all.

Although the authors' patterns and ideas are beautiful and her encouragement is sweet I will get no functional use out of this book until I become a master quilter and am just looking for fresh inspiration. I highly recommend flipping through this in person before buying to assess whether it's really going to help you or just skipping it entirely in favor of something more user-friendly.
