Book Description

October 28, 2002
It's a thoroughly new textile art, an ingenious mix of quilting and origami! The animals, leaves, flowers, and figures created for centuries in Japan out of two- sided colored paper are reinterpreted in fabric relief--and the resulting quilt blocks can become exquisitely stitched items. Just follow these designs to create irresistibly tactile sculptural quiltagami pillows, blankets, ornaments, and more. Add bead and ribbon embellishments for even more detail. You'll go wild for this original art form!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A combination of techniques used in quilting and origami, quiltagami involves folding and stitching fabric into animal, flower, and leaf shapes that delicately pop out from quilted blocks that can be displayed on their own or integrated into a more elaborate project. Hiney uses clear color photos (unfortunately, not always carefully keyed to the text) and step-by-step drawings to illustrate the folding and stitching process, stressing throughout that practice makes perfect. An attractive array of these blocks, in prechosen color schemes, follows, each one introduced with a list of fabric and notion requirements and a photo of a finished product. Pattern diagrams ready for enlargement are pictured and clearly labeled. The designs are quite nice, ranging from sweet, folded-fabric ducks traveling a quilted sea and a three-dimensional pinecone ornament to an intricate rose that bursts from a background of sage-green leaves. Practiced quilters will have fun putting their talents to work in a different way; crafters who like paper folding may delight in new challenge. Stephanie Zvirin

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea...Poor Implementation, April 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Quiltagami: The Art of Fabric Folding (Hardcover)
This book looks wonderful and the quilts the author has made are beautiful, however the directions for the "origami" are nearly incomprehensible. I have become completely frustrated by the written instructions and the drawings only make sense on the first few steps of each project. An origami duck, which should take 15 minutes to produce, had four adults completely stumped for an hour. I only recommend this book if the author comes with it to explain how the pieces are made. Perhaps a video would be a good solution.

2.0 out of 5 stars For the intermediate or advanced folder, January 20, 2006
This book has some negatives but also some pros. First the pros: the color photos of the finished projects are quite lovely and there seems to be lots of information. Now the negatives: there are too many dissimilar projects included, no suggestions on making the project your own, projects organized in a stiff and formal manor, instructions feel as if you have to dive right in rather than testing the waters to see if you enjoy the process, no rating system (i.e. beginner, intermediate, challenging) to gage how difficult the project is, and it seems to assume you already are familiar with the technique already. I wanted to like the book and the technique, but it felt like an intermediate or advanced text rather than for a beginner. You might have better luck if you already know the technique.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Hard!, August 14, 2008
I got this book because all the beautiful picture and thought I could make that too. It took me over and hour and 2 failed attempts (the fabric was complete ruinned) to make a simple spirl flower that I could have done with paper in no time. It was annoying. She gave no helpful tips or suggestions almost like she expected you to know what you were doing already even though the patterns she gives out are pretty "simple". don't get this book. I'm buying a few other books from amazon that have gotten higher reviews.
