Book Description

May 1, 2005
Scrapbooking and quilting are each two-billion-dollar industries.
Combine the two crafts and you've got a collection that will fly off the shelves.

A scrapbook gets put away; a quilt goes on display--perhaps framed and hung on the wall, or draped over the couch, placed right where everyone can see it. These 24 original quilts incorporate the same treasured photos and memorabilia that normally go into a scrapbook, but in a unique and unusual format. And they're fun to make too, thanks to the many innovative techniques that are both easy for a beginner to master and excitingly new to the experienced quilter. Direct print favorite pictures on fabric with an inkjet printer. Arrange images on the quilt to tell a story. Tea-dye material to make it will look antique, creating a perfect background for those vintage photos. Extensive opening sections on art and design basics provide a plethora of invaluable tips, from how to mix and match colors to how to use pattern and texture. (There's even a list of the 10 most common composition mistakes.) Quilters, collage artists, scrapbookers, and those who work with mixed media and assemblage will be thrilled at the abundance of breathtaking ideas on these pages.

More About the Author

First known for her Fragment series of small fabric collages, Lesley is now an internationally known art quilter and mixed-media artist with a passion for photos, color and the written word. She has taught extensively in the US and as far away as Italy and Australia. Her art and articles have appeared in numerous publications and juried shows. Her first book, Quilted Memories, brought new ideas and techniques to quilting and preserving memories. Lesley's second book, Fabric Memory Books, combines fabric and innovative ideas with the art of bookmaking. Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur (C&T) takes a new material to a new level. Lesley defines Lutradur as 'the magic in the middle' - an art material that combines the best properties of both fabric and paper.

Her next book, due out Spring 2011 is Creating with Transfer Artist Paper (TAP), an iron-on transfer paper Lesley deeloped that transfers inkjet printed images to fabric, paper, wood, canvas and more.

Lesley has filmed three instructional DVDs with Creative Catalyst Productions and Interweave. Not one to be camera shy, Lesley has also appeared on three episodes of Quilting Arts TV Season 1. Currently, Lesley is the host of BlogTalk Radio's Art & Soul show.

Realizing that artists, both new and experienced, often need more than new ideas and techniques to fulfill their art dreams, Lesley founded Artist Success™, where she shares her experience and knowledge as a coach and mentor, providing solutions for the struggling artist. 5.0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to jumpstart your creativity, July 26, 2005

This review is from: Quilted Memories: Journaling, Scrapbooking & Creating Keepsakes with Fabric (Hardcover)
This is one of those books that you may want to buy two copies of just in case something happens to one of them. It is absolutely full of Lesley's ideas and instructions for making truly remarkable mixed-media quilts that combine the best of art quilting, scrapbooking, and altered books. She gives permission to ignore all the traditional rules about making quilts (like using only 100% cotton and making sure all edges are perfectly even). Her quilts are quirky and yet lovely. And she shows readers how to make their own.

The book is jammed with useful information about finding and/or painting great fabrics, making all kinds of image transfers, coloring and bleaching, using design principles, how to add instant age, and finishing. Then there are detailed looks at memory quilts by various artists, not so much telling how to reproduce them exactly, but explaining the artists' techniques. (I really appreciate that a lot. Too many books tell you how to reproduce their examples exactly, but don't go into general techniques that you can adapt to your own needs. The worst is when they insist you use a certain brand name and don't tell you why!) The showcased quilts cover a range of styles, from sentimental to edgy. It will have you haunting thrift shops and estate sales, hoarding old laces and teatowels, and eyeing the buttons on your children's clothes.

What a joy of a book.

This review is from: Quilted Memories: Journaling, Scrapbooking & Creating Keepsakes with Fabric (Hardcover)
I started out being a doll artist and I have moved on to mixed media. Whether you are a scrapbooker, altered book artist or a dollmaker, you will find something in Leslie's book that will help you to become more creative in your art form. Leslie not only writes from her heart, she writes from her experiences. Out of all the books I have on quilting, dollmaking and other forms of fiber art, I will treasure Quilted Memories over and above them all.

Leslie allows the reader to experiment safely and without fear of doing something wrong in their quests to be unique. The beginning of the book describes in great detail how an artist creates and then an in depth study of color follows.

The instructions are easy to understand and the pictures help tremendously. I spend many precious moments reading this book and am excited about trying to incorporate these techniques in my dolls, altered books and wallhangings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even if you can't sew - you'll love it!, July 30, 2005
This review is from: Quilted Memories: Journaling, Scrapbooking & Creating Keepsakes with Fabric (Hardcover)
I do not even own a sewing machine, but this book still jump started my creativity in ways I never expected. Lesley offers guidance for creativity blocks and how to get around "never having enough time for art" tips that really work!

The instructions are clear and the photographs are beautiful! This book has a permanent place on my night stand so I can look at it again and again!
