From the Inside Flap

You are holding the first in a series of six books. The purpose of the series is to build your quiltmaking skills--from beginner to advanced--on a firm foundation. This first volume is to be used as a workbook. It contains a complete sequence of classes, lessons, exercises, and projects that will build your skills from one project to the next. We highly recommend that you make the quilts in the order presented, as we have placed them in order of complexity. Each quilt offers new challenges and involves new techniques that will help you continually build your skill level. We have chosen designs that are timeless and very adaptable to traditional fabrics as well as to more trendy fabric and color choices. Use these quilts to explore your color and style preferences. This book and the next in the series deal with quilts made of strips and squares. By mastering the techniques presented in these first books, you will be laying a foundation for precise, high-quality piecing. There are hundreds of quilt designs based on strips and squares, so you can spend a long time exploring these stunning quilts before you jump into the more complex piecing featured in the following books.

More About the Author

Harriet started quilting seriously in 1974, working alongside her mom. Her early quilting career included producing baby quilts for craft shows and teaching adult education classes. In 1981, harriet opened her quilt shop, Harriet's Treadle Arts. Her specialties at the time were free-motion embroidery, machine arts, and machine quilting. In 1982, Harriet attended one of Mary Ellen Hopkins's seminars. Mary Ellen's streamlined techniques and innovative design ideas led harriet to a new way of thinking, which caused her to give up the machine arts and to teach only quilting. Today, she is world renowned for being a true "mover and shaker" in the quilt world. In the late 1990s, she was voted one of the "88 Leaders of the Quilt World." Harriet created and inspired a whole new generation of machine quilters with her bestselling book Heirloom Machine Quilting, which has enjoyed 22 continuous years in print. She is also the author of Mastering Machine Appliqué and From Fiber to Fabric, and co-author of The Art of Classic Quiltmaking. She is responsible for a myriad of products pertaining to machine quilting, and she has developed batting with hobbs Bonded fibers and designed fabric for P&B Textiles. I own several of Harriet Hargrave's books and this one is perfect for anyone just starting out quilting and even better for those of us wanting to take a "refresher" course, by someone I consider a master in the quilting world.
The layout of the book is like a home study course-
There are 9 "classes" that take you from setting up your sewing area, going over the basic sewing machine parts, rotary cuttters and rulers. She moves on the various important steps of putting together a well constructed quilt project. This book ends with your "Final" - a wonderful quilt project that you can apply all that you have learned in the previous classes in the book. It's a great little quilt project- trust me!

There are plenty of color photos to go along with the classes- and special "note" boxes to give some really great advice on what works and why- and even goes over the many different ways we were taught to do things- giving you several techinques to try out and see what works best for you. With quilting- some things are not etched in stone and the book takes the time to go over and show you- so you can chose for yourself how best to learn certain techniques giving you the ability to do what works best for you-keeping quilting like it should be- FUN!

I like the fact that Harriet Hargrave's name is very well recognized in the quilting world and Carrie has taken the baton and this combined effort is just priceless!
It is like having your own private lessons at home, at your own speed and there is no doubt you are being taught by the best!

A Definite Must for those who are really interested in learning how to quilt and as I say-some of us that appreciate a few refresher courses from time to time!

I have MANY quilt books but this is my all time favorite book for the beginning quilter and for the quilter who would like to review her/his skills. I wish I would of had this book when I fist started quilting! It would of saved me so many headaches and mistakes.

I am looking forward to owning the complete set as the books are printed and am also ordering volume 1 books for my niece and sister who are new at quilting. No other book has moved me to write a review before.

Harriet Hargrave is a well respected quilter and author. I have several of her books. In her older books, she tends to try to cover too much at once. This is a detailed and well illustrated beginning volume. I bought it for my daughter who is just learning to quilt, but intend to buy another for myself. Her projects are intended for skill building, but at the same time are very useful.

This is an amazingly thorough introduction to quilting and full of tips for quilters of all levels. I have been quilting for fifteen years and learnt that I have many bad habits and there are lots of ways I could do things better and more easily. The sample quilts, based on only squared and rectangles, are great. However it definitely tends toward the perfectionist end of the scale, so may not suit everyone.

This new book by Ms Hargrave is a no-nonsense, tell-me-everything-I-need-to-know text for both the novice quilter and experienced quilters wanting to improve their craftsmanship. The book takes students through a series of projects design to teach them many of the skills involved in traditional quiltmaking. However, the information in the book is equally applicable to art quilters who wish to improve their cutting and stitching technique. The book covers a variety of topics not usually covered in beginning quilting texts (or even some of their encyclopedic cousins), including setting up the work area for comfort, correct cutting techniques, information about cotton fabrics, and information about the tools needed and how to care for them.

Each topic is accompanied by excellent close-up photographs, which enable readers who do not have ready access to a beginning quilting class to use the book as a beginning quilting course. The book can also serve as a "refresher" and source of additional information for students enrolled in a beginning sewing class. More experienced quilters will find the book a great "go-to" reference source, although an alphabetical index of topics would have been helpful. (The topics are arranged by lessons within each class.)
The included projects are suitable for the level intended, and students should not be influenced by the "reproduction" fabrics used in many of the samples----they can be made in a variety of more contemporary fabrics.

I recommend this book as a fantastic addition to the libraries of novice and experienced quilters alike.

Every quilter should own this book. If you desire to improve your quilting skills, there is no better way than to buy this book and work your way through the exercises. Even though I have been quilting for several years, there are still those horrible moments when I wonder what went wrong on a project. I think most quilters know what I mean. This book has already helped answer some of those questions. This first book is in a series that wishes to provide the equivalent of a PhD to the quilter that completes the series. Once you reach the end of the series, you will be a master quilter and able to move into advanced quilts. If you are a beginner, start here. If you are already quilting, you are likely to find help here. Well done, Harriet and Carrie!
