Book Description

March 1, 2005
Author and needlework expert Celia Eddy says that making a quilt is like baking a cake. First, quilters should know the basic tools and ingredients. Next, they need a formula--or a recipe--to follow. Finally, they must gather all ingredients together and follow the recipe. The Quilter's Recipe Book offers a feast of ideas for piecing, patchwork, and appliqu©--the basic techniques required for producing beautiful quilted items. Easy-to-follow instructions show how to piece the block, and make eight-pointed stars, fans, log cabin blocks, appliqu© blocks, and blocks with curves. Each quilting "recipe" shows how to make a beautiful quilt and includes:
  • A large color photo of the pieced quilt
  • Block diagrams, templates, and drafting instructions
  • The amount of fabrics needed
This beautiful volume also gives advice on creating imaginative combinations of fabrics and colors. Quilters can choose from 100 traditional and contemporary quilts, and can also use the blocks to create many other beautiful quilted things. Quilt recipes are arranged in order of complexity. More than 400 color illustrations.

    From Booklist

"The hardest thing . . . is deciding which quilt to make." This compendium of 100 block patterns is definitely going to make deciding easier. A section of quilting basics, briefly covering craft tools and techniques--from templates to piecing to finishing--leads off, followed by a full-color gallery of -thumbnail-size pattern designs, each named and referenced to pages on which specifics about block construction can be found. Each block gets a two-page spread: pictured on the left-hand page is a larger picture of the block itself and graphs showing color and piece placement. Concise, step-by-step instructions, nicely illustrated and very clear, are on the right. Pictures of design variations, an icon establishing skill level, and template shapes to be enlarged are positioned in the margins. Beginners may need additional help with fabric selection and to determine the amount of fabric to buy, but this is otherwise a great starter guide; and the gorgeous, full-color photos will entice even some stitchers who already know the craft well. 5.0 out of 5 stars A great first quilting book, July 29, 2005
This review is from: The Quilter's Recipe Book: All the Ingredients You Need to Create Over 100 Fabulous Quilts (Paperback)
As a beginning quilter, I've been more inspired by the colors and quilt blocks in this book than in any other. The step-by-step "recipes" are a lifesaver for someone who's not sure where to start and make even the more challenging patterns seem accessible. The section on quilting techniques is not as in-depth as in some other books, but this book would be a more-than-adequate accompaniment to a basic quilting class or a beautiful supplement to a more comprehensive quilitng guide.
