Book Description

Quilting is a craft, rich with tradition and homespun, practical applications.  But it’s also an art--which, with needle, thread, fabric and an idea, can give us a new way of looking at, and wrapping ourselves in, the world.  This book profiles twenty American practitioners of that art, quilters whose fascinating, innovative work takes the craft one step further and makes it into something new.  These remarkable quilters describe their inspiration and methods and show us several examples of their best work.  Quilting Art serves as an idea book for quilters, as well as a gorgeous representation of the quilter’s art.

This could have been a superficial treatment of some artists who had no control over the final product. Instead, it's an in-depth, historical and inspirational survey of twenty artists, their work and their techniques. The artists must be thrilled with it. The photography is first-rate, and the interviews produced some fascinating accounts by the artists about how they came to their present-day work. Kudos to Ms. Gillespie for this informative and beautiful book!

Have you ever dreamed about becoming an artist? How about an art quilter? Glimpse into the lives of 20 art quilters and you'll enjoy reading about their journeys, discoveries, and inspirations. I found the book by Ms. Gillespie to be very interesting and down to earth. I quite enjoyed getting to know these quilters a bit more and perhaps made some discoveries about myself and my dreams as well.

This is a unique set of personal interviews into the lives of women quilt artists. There is a wide spectrum of personal styles and artist's statements on their design processes and views on the subject of quilting and art. I thoroughly appreciated the jounalistic style of the author.

Each quilter describes how they accomplished their art piece. A wonderful book to inspire and motivate quilt artists into trying the various techniques described. I especially enjoyed the one on using various shades of netting to achieve different shades of skin tones.
