5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of information for a small price
I am a beginning quilter, and often find the information in quilt books to make assumptions that I know how to figure yardage, etc.

This book gives 8 pages in the introduction explaining with illustrations various techniques and preferences in terms of equipment.

There are 3 chapters in this book. The first chapter is titled: Short Cuts to Short Strip Piecing. I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner book, good approach to re-use old fabrics
This is a good beginner book. It does not assume a knowledge of techniques needed and starts with fairly detailed general instructions.

I bought this book a gift to a non-quilting girlfriend, whose mother passed away and she wanted to make a quilt out of the dresses that her mother owned as a memory quilt. When I saw this book I thought it would be exactly...

This review is from: Quilting with Strips and Strings (Dover Quilting) (Paperback)

I found this chapterto be helpful, adding information not included in other tips & tricks books I've read. This has decreased my quilt making time on other projects.

Chapter 2: Striep Piecing to Form Log Cabin Designs. This chapter shows placement for many log cabin blocks, including flickering shadows, butterfly, sunshine & shadow, square with ring around, straight furrow, and streak of lightening, as well as non-square shaped versions.

Chapter 3: Making String Designs on a Shaped Base. Includes designs such as: Old fashioned string quilt, Amish shadowed square, Chevron, string pyramids, spider web, string star.

I have yet to make any of the quilts, but have used the text to help me in other quilts I have made. Currently, I am eagerly saving my scraps and strings from other quilts, in anticipation of making one of the quilts in this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm happy I bought this book, January 12, 2009
This review is from: Quilting with Strips and Strings (Dover Quilting) (Paperback)
This is a book written by a very innovative and competent quilter in the 80's. I'm a very experienced strip quilter, using rotary methods, and I still found new ideas. The 'cut and combine to make new patterns ' are really stunning, and very well explained and easy.
It's easy enough for a new quilter, and has neat ideas for an experienced one .

3.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner book, good approach to re-use old fabrics, April 18, 2011

This review is from: Quilting with Strips and Strings (Dover Quilting) (Paperback)

When I saw this book I thought it would be exactly what she needed.
Simple book, with ideas of how to use small pieces of fabric not bought as yardage. My friend took almost a year to make her memory quilt and now is a treasured family keepsake. My friend told me that she would not have been able to undertake the project without this book.

This book has instructions for making 46 patchwork quilts. In addition to general technique description, it also includes 32 full size templates. It contains both color and black and white photos to illustrate the instructions.
The book has section on:
* Equipment
* Quick cuts from strips
* Quilt as you go
* Selecting and preparing fabrics
* Making string material
* Assembling strings on a base

This review is from: Quilting with Strips and Strings (Dover Quilting) (Paperback)
Explanations of stripping technics are good but lack examples of what blocks would look like in a quilt. This is a serious defect.
