Editorial Reviews

Review

"What makes this book unique is that it is written by two women with inside information, both having grown up within the Mennonite-Amish subculture where quilting is a way of life." -Lancaster Intelligencer Journal

From the Back Cover

Why do so many Amish and Mennonites who are devoutly committed to a simple, austere life make beautiful quilts? Why this splash of beauty? What are the favorite designs? How has quilting become a part of the very fabric of Amish and Mennonite life? What are basic how-tos of quiltmaking? "Quilting has survived among these frugal, simple people because a quilt is not only apiece of art. It is also functional."

1.0 out of 5 stars small innocuous tourist pamphlet, February 28, 2004
This review is from: Quilts Among the Plain People (People's Place Booklet No. 4)) (Paperback)
No color, no patterns, no quilt specifics. Just general Amish-info. Mostly talks about present-day quilting for sales to tourists, polester batts and poly-cotton fabrics, as though more traditional quilts are just history.
If you're a quilter, spend a few dollars more to own intriguing and satisfying books -- e.g, *****Amish Crib Quilts from the Midwest: 90 color photos which clearly show every great color combination and quilting pattern + dimension, date, fabric info, etc. Any quilt pictured can go straight to big-bed size w/ application of a little arithmetic. Also gives us a new appreciation of cotton chambrays & simple warm baby quilts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quilts among the Plain People, March 30, 2005
This review is from: Quilts Among the Plain People (People's Place Booklet No. 4)) (Paperback)
An introduction to a quieter, simpler way of living. Photographs of Amish & Mennonite landscapes graphically depict the source of their traditional designs. Everyday aspects of life find their way into quiltmaking. Not a how-to-quilt book as much as an interpretation of nature into artform. Ever wonder how those quilts got their names and inspiration? This little book will inform you and encourage you to use creativity in your own life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quilts Among the Plain People, January 11, 2007
This review is from: Quilts Among the Plain People (People's Place Booklet No. 4)) (Paperback)
I was disappointed with this book - perhaps I had misread what it was about. Firstly it is in black and white on quite ordinary paper. I was expecting a tutorial book but found this leant more to the history of Quilting in the Amish community. Perhaps this might be acceptable to someone who had not heard of the Amish people and their association with quilts.
