5.0 out of 5 stars super fun, hip, modern and non-traditional quilts.
If you like traditional quilts, this is not the book for you. But if you are a hipster quilter who likes non-traditional and contemporary quilts, then you are going to love this book! There is not a single quilt in here that I don't like - I can't wait to whip one up!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good ideas, instruction not so much
I love handmade items and have recently gotten into quilting. However, I don't like 'traditional' quilts, like flying geese patterns but rather more contemporary looks. This book is very inspiring, offering 20 designs that you never thought you'd see on quilts, very unique and contemporary. This book is very inspiring, offering 20 designs that you never thought you'd see on quilts, very unique and contemporary. I gave it three stars because the instructions and diagrams are pretty basic. If you want step by step, detailed instructions on exactly what to buy and how to cut it, this isn't for you. If you're comfortable with winging it, you'll enjoy the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Delightful and Refreshing Quilt Book, December 28, 2009

I could use many words as descriptors about this book. Delightful, refreshing, enchanting , appealing - one of the best little quilt books I have come across in a long while. I was not sure that I would be the best reviewer for this book because I don't make a lot of baby quilts any more. Boy! Am I ever glad I decided to have a look! This is one of those books that screams originality. The patterns are simple - and simple is a favorite with me - but each quilt also features the addition of something that makes the quilt special, endearing and enchanting.

Looking at the table of 'contents' section tells you that these quilts are just plain fun. The beginning of the book focuses on a very well thought out 'quilting basics' section. The book is also peppered with great short-cut ideas. A combination of captivating hand drawn images as well as photographs makes reading the directions, for the 'basics' as well as for the quilts totally enjoyable. Quilt directions are beautifully done - exemplars of the quilts are shown in sketches as well as photographs.

The book contains 12 simple quilt designs - each of which has an added, endearing, element. Folk artsy, colorful, embroidered and unique additions to each design makes these simple quilts stand out. The ideas are, of course, great for a child - but also for the adults in the crowd who look for a touch on whimsy in everything! The designs are great for beginner's, especially with the wonderful 'basics' chapter to guide them, but also would be winner's for adults as well.

There are also lots of tips and tricks for applique, embroidery, quilting, bindings and how to add fun elements like small pockets.

This book makes me smile. It makes me want to put more fun back into my quilting. I have always thought that rules are made to be fiddled with (once you know the basics anyway) and this book , I think, proves me right. This is one book that will please quilters of all ages - and I am sure that if you buy it - you will find yourself smiling too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Folk Art Style, April 21, 2009

Well, I happen to like the more primitive, liberated styles of patchwork. These quilts are for children after all. I have enjoyed this book alot and find most of it very inspiring. I wouldn't have made the same color choices but we each have our own individual tastes.

The book is filled with great ideas with fun and funny designs. Babies and little children will love the whimsical feel of the patterns. It also is good for sparking creativity when one is having a creative block. Must have a copier to size the patterns to your desired sizes. Takes some copier knowledge and can be frustrating, that's the only downside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Modern Quilt Book!, May 9, 2009
This review is from: Quilts, Baby!: 20 Cuddly Designs to Piece, Patch & Embroider (Paperback)
This is a great how-to book for baby quilts. I am one of the quilt designers (lemongrass and intersection quilts) and I feel HONORED to be included in this wonderful book along with such amazing artists. I love the modern, non-cutsy designs. They are all very easy to make. Instructions are great. One negative review said the book was juvenile and simple. I agree! The title of the book says exactly what the book is about: easy baby quilts that can be done in a weekend. Very cool book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and inspiring, April 28, 2009

I love this book! I am happy to find a book about baby quilts that is not all pink and blue ooey gooey sweetness. These quilts were created by artists yet they are not intimidating but are inspiring and see absolutely doable. The quilts in the book inspire me to be creative and to have fun sewing (I especially love the dog in the red shoes!) The writing style is witty, the book layout is a delight and it is the first baby quilt book I have ever seen that makes me want to say, "Hey! Baby quilts can rock!"

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Quilt Inspiration for Modern Tastebuds, January 9, 2011
By
This review is from: Quilts, Baby!: 20 Cuddly Designs to Piece, Patch & Embroider (Paperback)
I love this book! I'm not a fan of traditional quilts at all, but I enjoy quilting. This book fits the bill perfectly. The quilts are pretty easy to put together, and the designs are really cute. The only downside is that the appliques are a bit of pain to figure out the resizing on. Some say, "75% larger" - which is easy to arrange - others say "tree is 11 inches tall, bird is 3 inches tall" which is a pain to navigate on the photocopier. It would have been good if the author had a downloadable option for the appliques so they can easily be printed at full size. I recently made a quilt from here - it took a few days to complete.

2.0 out of 5 stars Zakka wannabe..., May 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Quilts, Baby!: 20 Cuddly Designs to Piece, Patch & Embroider (Paperback)
The authors apparently reviewed several zakka websites and looked at the designs on some fabric from Japan for inspiration for the designs in this book. There is, however, a difference between a charmingly hand-made item and an ineptly made item that indicates lack of skill. The claim that one can make these projects in a weekend does not account for the slapdash look of the samples in the book. You may be inspired by a little embroidered deer traced from a coloring book but if you want to save time and money, take your inspiration from the cover as the designs there are about as good as it gets.
