Book Description

May 1, 2006
The 10 applique patterns in this book are beautiful examples of a type of 19th century quilt style noted for its decorative features - the appliqued quilt with bold exuberant floral patterns in bright colors of red and green. Historians Nancy Hornback and Terry Clothier Thompson share their enthusiasm for these quilts. "It amazes us to think that after more than 150 years, red and green applique quilts still excite the eye and inspire us to recreate their beauty." Most of the quilts were made in points of migration - a path stretching from Pennsylvania through the Ohio Valley states to the Midwest. The quilters were German, English, Scotch-Irish, Irish and Welsh. They used the fabrics available to them at the time. This book builds on that background, using fabrics that are available to us today. The quilting itself was an important part of the red and green quilt tradition, so Nancy and Terry have included a bountiful selection of quilting designs.

This book was like opening a box of truffles. The quilts are beautiful and the stories make it special. I read it from cover to cover the first afternoon. It is a feast for the eyes and the patterns are terrific.

I saw a quilt that was made using the patterns in this book and was blown away. The book is VERY well written, the instructions are very clear, and I can't wait to get started on my quilt.

5.0 out of 5 stars The quilts from personal collections & historical societies, August 3, 2008
By
This review is from: Quilts in Red and Green and the Women Who Made Them (Paperback)
"Cares melt away...when you kneel in your garden" begins a book just out about 19th century red and green appliqué quilts. Nancy Hornback and Terry Clothier Thompson have joined their passions for appliqué quilts and put together a visually terrific book with historical information about the makers and the ten quilts this book features. The quilts are from various personal collections and historical societies in Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Kansas, and Illinois, and have seldom been viewed in public. They are unique and wonderful!! Most are varieties of smaller repeated block styles, some with a central focus and two in the four-block style, and another is a large five-block on point that fools the eye completely.
