This book was like opening a box of truffles. The quilts are beautiful and the stories make it special. I read it from cover to cover the first afternoon. It is a feast for the eyes and the patterns are terrific.

I saw a quilt that was made using the patterns in this book and was blown away. The book is VERY well written, the instructions are very clear, and I can't wait to get started on my quilt.

The quilts from personal collections & historical societies,
By Kimberly Wulfert (Ojai, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Quilts in Red and Green and the Women Who Made Them (Paperback)
"Cares melt away...when you kneel in your garden" begins a book just out about 19th century red and green appliqué quilts. Nancy Hornback and Terry Clothier Thompson have joined their passions for appliqué quilts and put together a visually terrific book with historical information about the makers and the ten quilts this book features. The quilts are from various personal collections and historical societies in Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Kansas, and Illinois, and have seldom been viewed in public. They are unique and wonderful!! Most are varieties of smaller repeated block styles, some with a central focus and two in the four-block style, and another is a large five-block on point that fools the eye completely.

Desire for red and green quilts,
This review is from: Quilts in Red and Green and the Women Who Made Them (Paperback)
I have always been drawn to red and green quilts since visiting my grandparents victorian home in upstate NY. This book has a lovely variety of red/green quilts, their history, and modernized patterns. I am not only anxious to use some of these patterns, but can hardly wait until Thompson's next red/green quilt book.

a good addition to quilt history,
By
This review is from: Quilts in Red and Green and the Women Who Made Them (Paperback)
this is a quite nice book. in addition to the quilts, there are photo of 19th century women, some of whom are associated with some of the quilts. there are photos of antique sewing tools, newspaper advertisments, and clothes. there are photos of modern reproductions of german dower chests and even a german 19th birth certificate.
the appliqe designs are interesting. some are beautiful. most of not as sophisticated as some quits in other books. the quilts all have aspects worth studying. and none are intimidatingly perfect. this will be a pleasant volume for the undemanding historian. the short stories of the pioneers should impress anyone with the courage needed to cross and ocean or half a continent in search of a better life. a selection of quilt designs (pattern pices included) is made into a modern samplar which is done with batiks, making the contrast between old and new as wide as possible. quilting designs are included, and also quilting stencils. it would be possible to recreate some of these quilts nearly absolutely. and for all this goodness, i gave it only three stars because most of the quilts do not excite me. i have other recent books on red and green and four block styles which i love. i cannot say why this book doesn't make a better impression on me. but tastes differ, and a number of quilters will probably use this as their bible for recreating antique quilts either authentacally or as adaptations. |
