Book Description

May 1997
Inspired by the quilts in this publication, anyone will be able to turn that stack of Grandmother's unfinished blocks or the patchwork bits and pieces rescued from a flea market into a stunning quilt. This book features 20 full-color, full-page photographs of quilts by Paul D. Pilgrim that blend old blocks and pieces with new fabrics, and it also gives tips on working effectively with these remnants of the past. Commentary by Paul D. Pilgrim and author Gerald E. Roy sheds light on the inspiration for each quilt, and diagrams identify block designs and fabric and block dates, making this book a good tool for historical identification. This publication is sure to result in the rescuing of many an 'orphan' block - and the making of many a beautiful quilt. REVIEW: According to The Chattanooga Times, "I always like the teaching workshops that feature ways to useunfinished objects and find pleasure in the response from the participants. It is fun to create a beautiful work out of bits and pieces of neglected scraps and blocks. That is why the book of Paul Pilgrim's work excited me, for what he did with those scraps is a wonder to behold."

4.0 out of 5 stars the work of a unique artist, January 27, 2012

This review is from: Quilts by Paul D Pilgrim: Blending the Old and the New (Paperback)
Paul D. Pilgrim, whose work is showcased in this book, was an antique dealer who loved antique quilt blocks. Eventually, he began making quilts from the blocks he collected. Blending the Old and the New is essentially the catalogue of an exhibit of his quilts. From its date, I'd say the show happened either while he was dying or just after his death, so he didn't have a chance to give a lot of information on the specific quilts.

If you, like me, are crazy enough to collect antique blocks, there's a lot to learn from Mr. Pilgrim's work. In the absence of written explanations, study the quilts. See how he has used an asymmetrical layout to make use of an insufficient number of blocks. See how he has created a sampler with blocks of varying sizes, framing the blocks that didn't fit in various ingenious ways. See clever ways he has combined two sets of blocks with different patterns but of the same era.

There are no patterns here. When you buy old blocks, each group offers a unique set of problems: they're crooked, or fragile, or there are only 3 (but you couldn't resist them), or mice have chewed into a corner, or the red has stained the white sections of the block. This book doesn't offer any pat solutions, but it does offer a wealth of inspiration.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, December 4, 2011
This review is from: Quilts by Paul D Pilgrim: Blending the Old and the New (Paperback)
This book is not an instruction book, neither is it a book with historical detail. While there are color photos of each quilt, the commentary is lacking. Often the accompanying commentary is just a couple of sentences long. Each quilt pictured includes a chart of the blocks that indicates if the block was made from an old block or from contemporary fabric. Not very useful for either creating your own quilts or for understanding the historical background of the old blocks.

This book was not what I expected. Is good for reading but not learning more about quilting. I returned the book. Would be good for just reading.
