5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure for Every Quilter, July 5, 2000

This review is from: Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift: 20 Traditional Patterns for a New Generation of Generous Quiltmakers (Paperback)
"Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift" is undoubtably the most beautiful quilting book I have seen yet. Based on the recently published children's story, "The Quiltmaker's Gift", which is also a treasure, this book includes patterns and directions for making 20 traditional quilts. What impressed me the most when I first picked up this book was the gorgeous look and feel of the pages. Upon closer inspection, I have found the directions for each quilt to be very clear and easy to follow. Directions and fabric requirements are given for a lap, double and queen size quilt for each pattern. I especially like the way the authors have shown each quilt in at least 2 different color schemes and sometimes a variation of the pattern. An added feature of this book is the interesting historical background information on each quilt block. Also helpful are the design challenges which give you tips and suggestions for fabric choices, block settings, borders, etc. I would highly recommend this book to any experienced or novice quilter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quilts From the Quiltmaker's Gift, June 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift: 20 Traditional Patterns for a New Generation of Generous Quiltmakers (Paperback)
Even if you haven't read "The Quiltmaker's Gift", this is a terrific book of quilt patterns. It is a "must have" for every quilter.

At first glance, what sets this book apart from other quilting how-tos is how truly beautiful the book is to look at, the illustrations and overall appearance of the book is spectacular.

As for the quilts shown in the book, all of the blocks and quilts are of traditional design, and while all are available in other books, the examples in this book are exceptional. The color schemes and layout designs are sure to inspire even the most experienced and artistic of quilters -- and isn't that one of the reasons we buy quilt books?

The patterns are very well written, in that they are clear and quite detailed. There are excellent diagrams for each step of making the quilts, making the patterns easy to follow for both experienced and beginning quilters. Many of the different block patterns are also shown in alternate settings to show the variety of looks the same block can give you.

As quilting books go, this one is first rate.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors, September 17, 2003
By A Customer
I am a beginner quilter and found too many mistakes in this book. I found myself having to drive back into town for more material due to errors in the book. Example: Puss in the Corner asks you to cut 120 blocks of fabric A, (for a twin size) but you really need 135 blocks. The yardage to purchase is for the 120 blocks not the 135. The rest of the instructions for this quilt is incorrect. Come to find out, you need to go to a web site before you start a quilt in this book for all the corrections. Too much of a hassel. Not a good beginner book.
