5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure for Every Quilter

1.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
I am a beginner quilter and found too many mistakes in this book. I found myself having to drive back into town for more material due to errors in the book. Example: Puss in the Corner asks you to cut 120 blocks of fabric A, (for a twin size) but you really need 135 blocks. The yardage to purchase is for the 120 blocks not the 135. The rest of the instructions for...

"Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift" is undoubtably the most beautiful quilting book I have seen yet. Based on the recently published children's story, "The Quiltmaker's Gift", which is also a treasure, this book includes patterns and directions for making 20 traditional quilts. What impressed me the most when I first picked up this book was the gorgeous look and feel of the pages. Upon closer inspection, I have found the directions for each quilt to be very clear and easy to follow. Directions and fabric requirements are given for a lap, double and queen size quilt for each pattern. I especially like the way the authors have shown each quilt in at least 2 different color schemes and sometimes a variation of the pattern. An added feature of this book is the interesting historical background information on each quilt block. Also helpful are the design challenges which give you tips and suggestions for fabric choices, block settings, borders, etc. I would highly recommend this book to any experienced or novice quilter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quilts From the Quiltmaker's Gift, June 28, 2000

This review is from: Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift: 20 Traditional Patterns for a New Generation of Generous Quiltmakers (Paperback)
Even if you haven't read "The Quiltmaker's Gift", this is a terrific book of quilt patterns. It is a "must have" for every quilter.

At first glance, what sets this book apart from other quilting how-tos is how truly beautiful the book is to look at, the illustrations and overall appearance of the book is spectacular.

As for the quilts shown in the book, all of the blocks and quilts are of traditional design, and while all are available in other books, the examples in this book are exceptional. The color schemes and layout designs are sure to inspire even the most experienced and artistic of quilters -- and isn't that one of the reasons we buy quilt books?

The patterns are very well written, in that they are clear and quite detailed. There are excellent diagrams for each step of making the quilts, making the patterns easy to follow for both experienced and beginning quilters. Many of the different block patterns are also shown in alternate settings to show the variety of looks the same block can give you.

As quilting books go, this one is first rate.

The rest of the instructions for this quilt is incorrect. Come to find out, you need to go to a web site before you start a quilt in this book for all the corrections. Too much of a hassel. Not a good beginner book.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Find!, June 28, 2000

This review is from: Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift: 20 Traditional Patterns for a New Generation of Generous Quiltmakers (Paperback)
This beautiful and exceptional quilting book is an excellent companion book to The Quiltmaker's Gift. As a quilter, I am very impressed by the quality of the quilts in this book, the photos, the directions, and the many little extras that are in this lovely book. This is a "must have" for any quilter, and the 2 books together would make a lovely gift for a quilting grandparent and grandchild to share.

This is a wonderful book. The quilts were well chosen so beginner and advanced quilters can make them. The pictures and diagrams are very good. I also liked the information on the different quilt makers. This is a book that I will use a lot. Being a beginner quilter, it explains everything well. Very satisfied with the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Art-Quilt Look for Traditional Patterns, May 14, 2004
By

This book contains clear instructions for traditional quilt designs. The quilts photographed are definitely art-quilt in their style, so the quilter who wants to get that look while using beloved old-fashioned patterns will find this book a treasure. There are also a number of suggestions for different approaches in a "Design Challenge" section for each quilt. Some quilts show different sets, and all show varied color and fabric combinations. This allows even beginning quilters to be adventurous without worrying too much about spoiling their fabric -- there are enough illustrations that you can visualize how your own choices will look.
The directions are clear, with plenty of illustrations to show exactly how the pieces go together. Quick cutting techniques are used, and there are many helpful tips about pressing and stitching. The general instruction section is also very good, with much more information than most quilting books (there are even stretches for those marathon quilters). The charts apparently have some errors -- though I never follow patterns exactly enough to have found them -- but with that warning in mind, I think this would be a good candidate for your first or your only quilting book.
The book itself is beautiful, and the historical notes are interesting. I also liked the fact that each quilt pattern includes notes warning the quilter about which parts may be difficult.

3.0 out of 5 stars directions misprinted, December 30, 2001
By
I only rated this book a 3 because I had a difficult time trying to get my seams to come out perfect. Had to trim many seams to get it all to work. I choose to make Toad In The Puddle. It was alot of work. Then a month later the owner of the quilt store where I purchased the book and fabric, gave me a phamplet of corrections. No wonder why things weren't coming out right! I made me upset to think they would print so many patterns incorrectly. So I advise anyone buying this book to be careful. The update is 6/1/01.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful quilts for all skill levels, September 22, 2001

This book beautifully ties to "The Quiltmaker's Gift." Especially nice is the inside scoop from the illustrator herself on the hidden-in-plain-view aspects of the illustrations in the story book. I had to keep both handy as I made my way through. One bit of advice: this printing has addressed most of the errors in the patterns. However a couple of errors remain and you can get the corrections from the Quiltmaker's Gift website.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for any quilter: young or old, new or experienced., June 24, 2000
This review is from: Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift: 20 Traditional Patterns for a New Generation of Generous Quiltmakers (Paperback)
"Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift: Twenty Traditional Patterns for a New Generation of Generous Quiltersmakers" is just as colorful and wonderful as "The Quiltmaker's Gift." Both books are rich with the beautiful illustrations of Gail De Marcken. It is so fun to view all of the "real" quilts that have been made by many talented quilters of all ages and to read the stories of why they have made the quilts. The book contains the step by step process of how to make the quilt blocks for 20 different quilt patterns from "The Quiltmaker's Gift" and also shows several colorways for each of the patterns. I would recommend this book for all quilters, beginner to experienced. Please be sure to read The Quiltmakers Gift", too. It has a message about generosity that continues into "Quilts from The Quiltmaker's Gift."

This review is from: Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift: 20 Traditional Patterns for a New Generation of Generous Quiltmakers (Paperback)
I am a beginning quilter and this book is written for any beginner or pro to use. It rates the quilts in terms of how difficult they are. Each pattern is shown in two or three different finished quilts, making it helpful to choose a color scheme. Each pattern also has directions for 3 different sizes, no math required to make the size you want! The pressing (yes ironing!) directions make it easy to get your seams butted! Completed projects take less time and come together beautifully! If you want to try and quilt, please look at this book! The Quiltmaker's Gift story book, which accompanies this book, is beautiful! Great investment of a few bucks!
