Having loved Marc Platt's TV story Ghost Light, but not at all his novel Time's Crucible, I wondered about this - the first of the "Companion Chronicles" that I would be sampling. Fortunately, it's a highly enjoyable story! The one-hour audio adventure features the First Doctor and Susan, travelling on their own before their time in 1963 London. Carole Ann Ford narrates the story, with only one other character's voice being read by another actor (as is, seemingly, the norm for these productions) - in this case, Carole Ann's real-life daughter! Ford easily slips back into the role she originally left nearly 50 years prior, and part of what makes her performance so astonishingly good is how well she's able to imitate the mannerisms and cadence of William Hartnell's delivery when reading the dialogue for the Doctor. The story packs a lot into its pair of 30-minute episodes, and Platt gives us an alien world that really seems alien, with lots of rich imagery and impressively unusual features. All in all, I was surprised at just how well-done and enjoyable a Doctor Who audiobook could be, and I've already started picking up more.

There are some Companion Chronicles that absolutely blow me away and provide amazing new insight into a character. Quinnis isn't one of those, but it is a fantastic adventure tale set before an Unearthly Child that finds the Doctor and Susan on the planet Quinnis.

Carole Ann Ford captures the spirit of the First Doctor very well in her reading and you see the tenderness and care he has for her. The story world is pretty interesting and writer Marc Platt brings it to life quite nicely as this piece of continuity from the TV show is filled in. There's a scary monster and a a few nice plot twists. Ford and her daughter are great working together in this story. Overall, this was a fun hour of audio.
