I feel better knowing Peggy Lee is just a DVD away...,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Quintessential Peggy Lee (DVD)
About 15 years ago, I saw Peggy Lee at the Ballroom (in NYC) for the very first time. She was in her late 60's at the time...maybe even her early 70's...and put on a show that I will never forget....This dvd is of a performance that wasn't too long before that night. It brought back some fantastic memories for me. Having no experience with the "younger Peggy"...I am quite pleased to have a DVD that shows her the way I first encountered her.... Of course, I've heard everything she's done since then and love both the young and old Peggy. Buy the DVD...Have a glass of wine...and let Peggy entertain you for an hour and a half....She so obviously loves what she is doing..you can't help but love it and her too.

A rare filmed concert of Peggy Lee. Although not one of her greatest performances - having been filmed late in her career - it is a wonderful opportunity to see her in a live setting. I have always enjoyed this concert but to my surprise - there are addition songs on the DVD release that were never included on previous editions on video (VHS and LaserDisc). "Lover," "I'm A Woman," "Hey Big Spender," "Love Me or Leave Me" and others - nearly 20 minutes of additional footage. A must have for any Peggy Lee fan.

The Best (and only) Filmed Concert of a Great Legend,

For those tried and true Peggy Lee fans, this is a "must have" for your video collection. I purchased it in 1993 while living in Los Angeles, CA, and I have never regretted it!Although the sound quality is a bit poor, it gives her fans a good look-see of the crooner during her later years. Barely moving her lips, she sings such favorites as "Is That All There Is", and the eye watering, "The Folks Who Live On the Hill". My hope is that someone will convert this video to DVD one day, and using today's technology, improve the color and audio tracks of the original work. Unfortunately, we can't, as viewers, change the venue of where the concert took place (a tacky Atlantic City supper club of sorts), but this still should not keep a true "Peggy" fan from putting this video on the "A" list.

Peggy Lee at her Best,

If you are a fan of Peggy Lee you will love this. The sound quality is not state of the art, but its great to see a document of this women in action in her later performance years. It's got all! Her version of Wind Beneigh My Wings is the definative one. My only complaint is the cheesy cheesy Atlantic City room and audience.

Peggy Lee is divine!,

Peggey Lee "inhabits" the lyrics of her songs! She lives the music as only a great actress can! This live concert performance is most likely the very best filmed recording of a great artist who is no longer among us! Yes, she had a facelift or two but she looks and sounds great! All new, young jazz singers need to see Peggy Lee live to appreciate the spell she could cast on her audience!

This 'club date', recorded in its entirety in the early 1980s, is an important document of a seminal figure in American music, the divine Peggy Lee. Although just a few years past the time when her voice could shine with that famous crispness and clarity, and before the time when her health problems caused her voice to shrink to a whisper, here she is still at the top of her game, and her musicianship is undiminished.
This woman literally lived to make music, and the combo that backs her up obviously love collaborating with her. She looks great, never misses a beat or an inflection, and has the audience (and us) right in the palm of her hand. And the musicianship of everyone concerned here is dazzling. If you love Peggy Lee as I do, you must own this disc. A friend came over for dinner last night and we watched it afterward. He was transfixed, blown away. Along with Ella Fitzgerald and maybe Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee just may be the greatest female singer of them all. Her subtlety is unmatched. For Ella, the words were almost beside the point (a songwriter once remarked, "Why bother writing lyrics when Ella does so well without them?"). But for Peggy Lee, the words and the music are inseparable. She takes you to the inner core of a song like nobody else, and always leaves a touch of mystery, never overstating the case. A delight, a treasure,in every way. The disc is one of the jewels in my collection.

I am bowled over by the criticism that this is not her best..they all are her best. This shows a richness and a subtle softness in her voice that proves only voices like Sinatra or Bennett, like Ms. Peggy here, could pull off the numbers with a style that shows a different approach vocally that, were she 30 years younger, might not have come out. No one who loves this woman's style will regret buying this one.

Peggy Lee in Atlantic City,
By
This review is from: The Quintessential Peggy Lee [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This Film was apparently done in Atlantic City about 1984. Sadly, Miss Lee has suffered through bad health and is not the woman she was. As a singer though, she is still great and includes many of her greatest hits including "Why Don't You Do Right", "Mannana", "I Don't Know Enough About You", "Johnny Guitar" and "Fever". As she goes on, she becomes younger and you see that the music means everything to her.

The Quintessential Peggy Lee is a perfect title for this DVD. I'm loving getting an actual video of one of her performances from start to finish. Her backup are outstanding musicians in their own right and accompanied Peggy for several years. If you're a PL fan, you need this DVD in your collection.
