Book Description

October 1, 2005

From Reservoir Dogs in 1992 to the recent Kill Bill series, the films of Quentin Tarantino have always provoked a reaction from audiences and critics alike, many attracting a cultlike following. In this book, Edwin Page discusses each of the eight films that Tarantino has either written or directed, or both, in an attempt to find out how the former video store clerk has realized his fantasy and become one of the world’s most successful and well-known directors.

Examining the inspiration and influences behind each film, as well as identifying the common threads that run through all of his work, this book aims to show the depth and complexity behind Tarantino’s trademark “guns and gangsters” style.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This meticulously researched love letter to Quentin Tarantino is a must-have for the director's rabid fans, but those skeptical of his talent or the esteemed spot in film history he occupies will remain unconvinced. Page annotates all eight movies Tarantino has written and/or directed, as well as his work on television shows ER and CSI; the result is an impressive and unmistakably glowing look at the director's oeuvre as written by a fan whose love of Tarantino knows no bounds. Each film is dissected and analyzed, with Page explaining how the director has incorporated various cinematic styles into his own. References to classic and influential films appear frequently, and Page offers copious quotes and footnotes to back up his theories. His love of minutiae at once propels and hamstrings the book, as the trivia, review snippets and interview excerpts that appear as pull quotes on nearly every page are distracting, but casually informative. An exhaustive and exhausting look at one of the most influential directors of the last 20 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars One for everyone, May 2, 2006
This review is from: Quintessential Tarantino: The films of Quentin Tarantino (Paperback)
Well - I enjoyed it!!!... as an admirer of Tarantino, although not a fanatic, I found it an easy, sensible, informed read and it lead me to admire the bloke a lot more after reading this than I did before. I looked at other books recommended by the other 'critic' but they weren't (in my opinion) as smooth to read as this one - which is laid out with interesting little boxed snippets to the pages. Brilliant title by the way (which attracted me in the first place, incidentally)

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to its promise, April 8, 2006
This review is from: Quintessential Tarantino: The films of Quentin Tarantino (Paperback)
"Page's book is a quick glance over Tarantino's films from literary studies perspective. A good companion if you want to check out approaches on how to look at the films. Everyone who hasn't read the indispensible trio Bernard-Holm-Smith yet, or everyone who just wants to read a simple, fast and uncomplicated analysis of his films, should ca nit, but the book just is not really more than that." -Sebastian H.
