Oh those strings,
By Bomojaz (South Central PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Quintets & Strings 4 (Audio CD)
This is the fourth Contemporary LP (now CD) Niehaus recorded (spring 1955), and is different from the others with the addition of a string section (3 violos, 1 cello) to the regular playing unit. It's a shame, too, because without those strings this easily would have been a 5-star CD. On a handful of tracks the strings lay out, and these are the best selections on the disc, especially MY HEART STOOD STILL and JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS. With the strings the best track is FULL HOUSE, a Niehaus original, with excellent Bill Perkins on tenor and Bob Gordon on baritone sax. Still a decent CD, but it could have been even better.
