Book Description

Lynn Hoover has put together a collection of case studies, information and proven strategies to help dogs. Families everywhere can learn how to manage and modify problem behaviors while increasing their understanding of dog's unique emotional and relationship needs. Dog trainers and behaviorists will be amazed at the simple but innovative strategies that Hoover provides in this book; simple strategies are grounded in complex explanation. Hoover wants to reduce the number of companion dogs that are inappropriately punished, discarded and euthanized for behavior problems that are resolvable. Her book will benefit thinking people who want to help dogs with issues, from hyperactivity to inappropriate elimination, separation anxiety, and aggression.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Lynn Hoover's insights and her recommendations for managing canine behaviors are based squarely on scientific research, loving observation, and a joyful appreciation of dogs and the bonds between our two species. If you want to live happily ever after with your dog, read Dog Quirks. --Sheila Webster Boneham, Ph.D., author of Rescue Matters! and Training Your Dog for Life

I really like Lynn Hoovers approach and common sense ideas in this book, and her use of case studies to make her points. I think readers will get a lot out of seeing examples of the points she is making about real-life situations...Lynn really gets to the heart of recognizing behavior problems as miscommunication between the species. --John Ciribassi, DVM, Dipl. ACVB, Chicagoland Veterinary Behavior Consultants

Lots of practical advice and methods for solving dog behavior problems. This book is especially recommended for people who work with dog behavior problems that are caused by either separation anxiety or fear. --Temple Grandin, Ph.D., author of Animals in Translation, and Animals Make us Human. Listed in Time Magazine s, The 2010 Time 100- --The People Who Most Affect Our World

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Professionals February 10, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Dog Quirks and Behavior Solutions is a great book to own wherever you fall on the dog lover spectrum. For professionals looking for new approaches to training issues, and for dog lovers who enjoy an interesting read this book will deliver. The book addresses many behavior issues, or dog quirks, approaches for dealing with those issues, and even a recipe at the end for "Super Motivating Treats". The book uses Case Studies to give real life examples. The Case Studies are very interesting to read and give the reader a sense of how the training ideas work in real life. The author doesn't just teach us about dogs. She also looks at the bigger picture of how dogs integrate with their families. This is a missing component in many books today that give solutions that may look good on paper, but don't translate well to real people living real lives. This book is packed with good information from an overview of dog learning theory to family support to those interesting Case Studies. The other thing I love about this book is that it has an index. I find it very frustrating when I find a book with good information and the author hasn't bothered to include an index for quick reference. You will find yourself turning to Dog Quirks again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true understganding of why dogs do what they do September 18, 2010
Format:Paperback
Dog Quirks and Behavior Solutions is a book for the professionals in the crowd. If you're a dog trainer, a veterinarian, or a dog behavioral therapist, this book is for you. There is a lot of theory in the first half of the book, which grounds the practical solutions in the last half of the book.

There are case studies, highlighting several common dog issues, such as difficulty housebreaking, separation anxiety, inappropriate eating habits, or aggressiveness with visitors. All of them have a solution, dear dog owners, but it's going to take smarts, time and intentionality, according to Ms. Hoover.

A surprising note when you read the case studies (which I found very helpful to illustrate the issues AND the solutions) was that so many times the dog's issues were really human/owner problems. Many times a dog is suffering from being mishandled from the beginning.

There's also a great chapter in here on how to socialize puppies from eight to twelve weeks that would be a valuable resource for new puppy owners.

This is probably not a book for the newbie dog owner who's wanting simple solutions to behavior problems. But, if you're truly interested in the behavioral theory BEHIND the problems and are willing to devote concentrated time, it seemed like every dog quirk has a solution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book from a True Expert October 1, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is one of the best books of its type that I have ever read. It is thorough, it is very knowledgeable, and it is balanced.

The author is an expert at counseling people and at handling dogs in a huge variety of situations. She recommends that you deal with a professional with your dog if you can find a good one. But she recognizes that is often not possible. So, much of the information in this book can help you solve the problems yourself.

She also includes many, many references, some books and articles, and many that are free online. This book is truly packed with great information.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, practical, humane book! September 26, 2011
By LD
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Dog Quirks and Behavior Solutions is one of the most sensible, humane, and practical dog behavior books I've ever read. For me, it is right up there with my other favorites, Stanley Coren, Patricia McConnell, or Jan Fennel, and Lynn Hoover's book offers more specifically practical advice in ways that don't just help you to understand the behavior problems, but offers practical solutions on how to deal with issues and solve problems. It tells stories about specific dogs as each topic is addressed, and the personal stories illustrate real situations that people and dogs find themselves in. I find it to be remarkably non-judgmental, and it meets people where they are with their dogs. It addresses aspects of living with dogs in such a personal manner, it is like a wise grandmother stepping in and saying what needs to be said, having learned over the years how to say things so they can be heard, without putting anyone off to want to walk away from the situation, but rather to show them how to rise to the occasion, and address what needs to be addressed for the good of the dog, whether it means working through a solution in order to keep the dog, or, if necessary, rehoming him/her for his or her own best interest as well as the owners'. As someone who walks my dog daily in a large dog park (Frick Park, Pittsburgh), I often come across people whose dogs display behavior problems, who don't know how to correct the behavior no matter how hard they try (and sometimes are aware their own roles in creating the behavior patterns, but don't practically know how to change it). Occasionally owners of year-old pups who are still quite a handful even share their own conflicted feelings about living with their dog. Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars Good info June 6, 2012
By Leigh
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The info is good, but there was no table of contents for the digital version. The Case Studies were the most interesting and helpful. The first portions were full of detailed information, much of it couched in theoretical terms, so it was dense reading. Nonetheless, the book is insightful and helpful, but it is not a 'do-it-yourself by these simple rules' book. Instead it emphasizes an integrated solution approach, and sensible methods. But it does need a table of contents, and an index with inks to the content.
