Huck has inspired me to change through his common sense, straight-forward approach. He's been through laa I'm going through and communicates it so I know he's talking about what I'm experiencing. So far, I'm down 30 pounds.

Inspiring,

In this book the former governor of Arkansas discusses the diet and exercise plan that his doctor and team at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences developed for him, and how he lost 100 pounds. That is not the point of the book, though. He is not promoting his plan, or telling readers that they need to follow his plan. Rather, he takes the approach that people who need to lose weight know it, and often even know what to do to lose that weight. He does offer tips and advice throughout the book (such as eating small portions of fresh foods and getting adequate exercise), but his book is primarily about overcoming the inertia and influences that prevent people from starting or maintaining the life-long changes that are needed to lose weight and maintain a healthful weight. That is the meaning of the "12-Stop Program to End Bad Habits" of the subtitle. The chapter titles provide a good outline of the book and its advice: Stop Procrastinating, Making excuses, Sitting on the couch, Ignoring signals from your body, Listening to destructive criticism, Expecting immediate success, Whining, Making exceptions, Storing provisions for failure, Fueling with contaminated food, Allowing food to be a reward, and Neglecting your spiritual health. He says, and I agree, that you can skip the last chapter if you wish. The book is well written, is filled with entertaining stories of his own experiences, is a light and easy read, but provides support and inspiration for those who have trouble committing to a new routine. It is also affordable. I recommend buying and keeping a copy to reread when you want some extra inspiration.

I've Heard It All Before,

Arkansas Governor Michael Huckabee sat in a chair at a state cabinet meeting with all the cabinet members surrounding the ornate table and experienced one of the biggest embarrassments of his life. His extreme weight was too much for his chair to hold and he collapsed on the floor. Thus began his journey from obesity to health. This is not a diet book. There are no strict daily regimens or tasteless recipes included. What this book offers is a common sense approach to weight loss with a twelve-step STOP program to guide the reader down the right path to a healthy lifestyle. There are a dozen chapters, each presenting one thing the Governor wants you to stop doing. There is nothing new in this book. There are no secrets revealed. Just straightforward speaking, telling you what you already know. So why bother reading it? Because Huck, in his folksy, down-to-earth style that he continued in his three follow-up political books, captures our ears, our imagination, and our heart. If you've begun this same journey to a healthier person, this book would be helpful to keep on hand to provide sensible and doable inspiration. Unfortunately, those who watch Huckabee's current TV show will note that the Governor seems to be slipping back into his old ways. He no longer reflects the thinner, sleeker man on the jacket cover. He's not all the way back to his "before" picture, but he appears to be getting close.
