Book Description

July 19, 2001 0198270267 978-0198270263
This volume (in French) contains the editio princeps of the first part (4Q529-549) of the Aramaic texts from Cave 4 at Qumran which were originally assigned to Pere Jean Starcky (4Q521-578). The second part of the Aramaic texts will appear in volume XXXVII of the Discoveries in the Judaean Desert series, while the Hebrew texts were published in volume XXV.
These Aramaic and Hebrew texts include primarily parabiblical and pseudepigraphical compositions, often named 'Apocryphon', 'Testament', 'Pseudo-', or 'Visions'. They reflect the interest in biblical themes characteristic of Second Temple period Judaism, and exhibited in many of the Qumran compositions.

... inaugurates a new phase in the study of the Qumran Aramaic texts and their place within the Qumran library. Dead Sea Discoveries The Aramaic texts published in the present volume offer much food for thought. Dead Sea Discoveries The excellent photographs accompanying the volume furnish an indispensable tool for verification and further work on the fragments. Thus, the new edition supersedes previous ones and subsequent study must take it into account. Dead Sea Discoveries Puech has done a wonderful job of deciphering and commenting on these fragments. International Review of Biblical Studies Professor Puech's skills and experience as an epigrapher are second to none, and this is evident on virtually every page of this book. The Journal of Theological Studies It is impossible in a review of this nature to do justice to the phenomenal amount of effort and insight that has gone into a work like this in simply arranging the fragments and deciphering them, except to acknowledge this immense achievement and the debt of gratitude which we owe the editor.
