Short, poignant, delightful; a good pocket-sized gift, September 11, 2010
This review is from: Quotations (The Little Book Series) (Hardcover)
Churchill was always aware anything he said might be quoted, and sought to summarise his ideas in short, memorable phrases. This pocket-sized but high quality hardcover book is a little delight, fulfilling in substance what it lacks in length. In 40 or so un-numbered pages, fewer than 100 of the great man's more memorable utterances are interspersed with archive photos and portrait-drawings.
A couple of the more poignant examples taken from the same page, more or less at random, sums up the talent Churchill had for using the English language to concisely express the heart of the matter:
"A fanatic is someone who can't change his mind and won't change the subject" (recognise this description in anyone you know?)
and in revealing his courage and humanity:
"In war: resolution; in defeat: defiance; in victory: magnanimity; in peace: goodwill"
This small book is more a portable artefact to cherish than a tome for serious reading. It's to be sampled in bite-sized chunks, and would make a good small gift.
