Book Description

October 16, 2008
A major new translation of the sacred text of Islam.

The Qur?an, or literally ?recitation,? is the central religious text of Islam and the holy book of the Muslim faith. Originally composed in Arabic in the seventh century, the Qur?an collects the divine revelations passed down to the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel over many years after his first vision in a cave. In 114 chapters, or suras, the Qur?an provides the rules of conduct that remain fundamental to Muslims today?most important, the key Islamic values of prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, and absolute faith in God, with profound spiritual guidance on matters of marriage and family, crime and punishment, rituals, food, warfare, and charity.

With an estimated 1.8 billion members globally, Islam remains the second largest religion in the world after Christianity. And in light of the current upheavals in the Islamic world, there is a growing English-language audience eager to read and understand Islam and the Qur?an.

This new English translation by one of the foremost scholars of Islamic history, Tarif Khalidi, conveys the powerful language of the Qur?an and retains the rhythms and structure of the original Arabic. It brings to life for readers in English one of the world?s most influential sacred texts, forming a revelatory introduction to the prophetic narratives central to Muslim belief.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An eloquent and eminently readable translation . . . much closer to the way the first Muslims experienced the Qur''an."
-Reza Aslan, author of No god but God

" While being faithful to the original, [Khalidi] succeeds in conveying linguistic shifts, from narrative to mnemonic, sermons to parables. And there is an innovative component: it is the first translation that tries to capture both the rhythms and the structure of the Qur''an. . . . This translation manages to give a glimpse of the grandeur of the original. . . . A magnificent achievement."
-Ziauddin Sardar, The Guardian (London)

"What sets Khalidi apart from his predecessors is his sensitivity to the sounds and many layers of meaning of the original as well as his skill in conveying them to an anglophone audience...Khalidi''s introduction and bibliographic note are marvelously succinct, explaining the textual nature and structure of the Qur''an, its place in Muslim life, and providing a very useful summary of recent research and further reading...a landmark in the history of English translations of the Qur''an."
--Ziad Elmarsafy, Times Literary Supplement

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, March 18, 2009

This review is from: The Qur'an (Hardcover)
I picked this up because I always try new translations when they come out.

This is an accessible translation of the Qur'an, written in elegant but not pedantic English, extremely true to the Arabic without losing the poetic impact. The layout, size and format are so conducive to absorption and reading, that I stood some time in the bookstore reading before I purchased.

Among modern English translations, I think this will become a great contender.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version has no verse numbers, January 18, 2012
This is a wonderful translation of the Qur'an, but the method of including the verse numbers in the margins (print version) has been left out in the Kindle version. It's difficult to take off more than one star, as Khalidi's work is of such high caliber, but it is worth pointing out to those who are considering the Kindle version that you will be unable to "look up" a verse (rendering the Kindle version almost unusable for anything more than reading straight through). As far as I can tell, even the surahs are unnumbered.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Translation, May 9, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I desired a translation of the Qur'an which I could read through and think about on my own. This book was all that I had hoped for.
