5.0 out of 5 stars Rosza piano music gets authoritative performances!, June 11, 1999
By
This review is from: Rózsa: Complete Works for Solo Piano (Audio CD)
One thing you can say about Sara Davis Buechner, she plays with no sense of strain or hardness of tone. The recording quality given her is not brash, in fact, it is set back in the hall, which might have something to do with it. In the more lyrical works it works well. The louder sections (like the last movement of the Piano Sonata) glitter, gleam and excite without getting out of hand. Anyone who enjoys Rosza's music will enjoy and be familiar with his style-Hungarian through and through though not as abrasive as Bartok. Rosza to me is a great composer, and this disc further serves his purpose. Kudos to all concerned, including Ms. Buechner who put all of her time and energy in learning this music! Bravo!

4.0 out of 5 stars Miklos Rozsa?, October 5, 2002

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Rózsa: Complete Works for Solo Piano (Audio CD)
While many of you may be unfamiliar with the name of Miklos Rozsa, most of you have heard his music. Mr. Rozsa, born in Budapest in 1907, is known principally for his film scores. In 1946 he won an OSCAR for his score of Hitchcock's, "Spellbound", in 1948 for "A Double Life" and a third Academy Award for "Ben Hur" in 1959. During his life, Rozsa composed many works outside the film world including a Viloin Concerto, many pieces for orchestra and the piano compositions included in this recording. They are all very listenable, conservatively written and cover a wide range of emotions. The last piece on the recording is "Sonate fur Klavier, Opus 20", was written in 1948. The 20 minute work is given an absolutely virtuostic performance by the extremely talented pianist, Sara Davis Buechner.
Miss Buechner, who was the highst-ranking American prizewinner of the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Competition, has performed with most of the leading orchestras in the United States (Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, etc.). She is also on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. Her soft touch is amazing. If you have a chance to hear her-do not miss it. This recording captures Ms. Buechner's wonderful technique admirably.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!, April 26, 2002
This review is from: Rózsa: Complete Works for Solo Piano (Audio CD)
These pieces by Rosza are as varied in color, mood and tone as any collection I've heard. Sara Davis Buechner gives each emotion and style its due, imbuing every moment with lyrical musicality. She plays with great mastery and subtlety. This is a superb performance of less-than-well-known pieces that should be appreciated by every lover of fine contemporary piano works.
