3.0 out of 5 stars Design flaws from cost cutting
As other reviewers have mentioned, the scoop itself is fabricated separately and welded onto the pre-made shaft and handle, no doubt to cut production cost. The choice of metal for the welding appears to brass or copper, and it will tarnish after repeated use. fabricating a stainless steel 18/10 utensil with a rust-prone joint where inert structural stability is needed...

After too many bent spoons to count, we broke down and bought this scoop. Its engineering has exceeded my expectations on a couple of fronts:

First, the scoop itself has very thin (but strong) edges that slice easily into even hard ice creams with less effort than other scoops I've tried.

Second, the shape of the scoop does indeed produce beautifully round spheres of your favorite frozen dessert...ideal for anyone who values presentation and function.

Update (May 2010): I was fortunate to buy the scoop when I did; it was made in Germany and is as good as new. Unfortunately, the product is now manufactured in China; unsettling to see the price remain the same, since quality has been compromised with the switch to inferior materials. I won't be paying a premium price for Rosle products any longer.

The choice of metal for the welding appears to brass or copper, and it will tarnish after repeated use. fabricating a stainless steel 18/10 utensil with a rust-prone joint where inert structural stability is needed the most is incredibly short-sighted.

Over the recent years, Rosle has shifted productions lines to China, such that most if not all Rosle utensils are now made in China. I have no problems paying the price premium that Rosle charges if they can guarantee that the quality is unchanged (after all the computer that you are reading this review is also made in China). Sadly this is not the case.

3.0 out of 5 stars China not the problem, May 3, 2009

This review is from: Rösle 12741 Ice Cream Scoop (Kitchen)
This scoop is made in China, but that's not the problem. The problem is the exhorbitant price that can only be justified by the "Rosle" name. The scoop is unremarkable, though it does not suffer the fatal flaws of many junk scoops out there. The scoop works fine, but it is by no means as special as some reviews suggest. The edge of the scoop isn't particularly sharp, the balls of hard ice cream it scoops are not especially round, ice cream does stick to the scoop, and the brazing on the joint between the scoop and handle is not ground smooth and polished -- it looks like any ordinary, careless weld that was just plated over. This scoop should cost no more than $8.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average, July 3, 2009

Cook's Illustrated recommended this ice cream scoop, but I don't understand why. Ice cream sticks to it, and I haven't noticed that it produces curls that are any more or less "perfect" than other scoops I've used. I eat ice cream almost every day, and when this scoop is in the dishwasher I find that I'm just as happy to reach for a spoon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Design flaw, August 10, 2010
This review is from: Rösle 12741 Ice Cream Scoop (Kitchen)
After reading the recommendation in Cook's Illustrated, I ordered this scoop (not from Amazon) and had high expectations. When it arrived, the scoop part twisted a little bit in the handle part. I thought "maybe I got a lemon" and asked customer service for a replacement. The replacement scoop arrived yesterday and does the same thing. Clearly a flaw in the design. Now both scoops will go back to the vendor. This is an expensive scoop and I expected it to be flawless like my other utensils from Rösle which are made in Germany. However, this is a piece of junk "Made in China."

This ice cream scoop is the best! It feels great in your hand and forms perfectly shaped scoops. This is a perfect gift for any ice cream lover. Rosle makes incredible tools for all uses...I can't wait to acquire more tools for my kitchen.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Rösle scoop made in China, *not* Germany (incorrect prod desciption), February 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rösle 12741 Ice Cream Scoop (Kitchen)
Received item today and discovered Amazon's product description is flat wrong. Specifically, the Amazon review says, "All Rösle products are made in Germany, are dishwasher-safe, and carry a lifetime warranty against defects."

The sticker on the ice cream scoop prominently states, "Made in China". If I'd known this wasn't made in Germany like my other Rösle producgts, I'd have gotten a Chinese-made Zyliss or Oxo scoop for much, much less.

I'm too lazy to return this, so I'll give this product a go. Let's hope that the scoop really is dishwasher-safe and Rösle will honor any defects during a lifetime of use. (e.g., I noticed that the stem is welded to the ice cream scoop. I hope it stands up to my rock-hard ice creams from the deep freezer....)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not made in Germany, July 28, 2008
This review is from: Rösle 12741 Ice Cream Scoop (Kitchen)
Received two ice cream scoops (one is to be a gift) and they both had stickers on them that stated "Made In China" so someone better change the description of this item. Had I known that I would not have made the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best I have had, August 20, 2011

The thin-ness of this scoop makes it the best scoop I have ever had. Good quality, too. A little pricey, perhaps, but worth the money in the long-run.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you can only own one ice cream scoop, this is the one to buy, June 6, 2010

I found this Rosle ice cream scoop is easier to use on hard ice cream for portioning than what I used before, a gelato/ice cream spade. The pointed tip and the round handle together help make round scoops. I use my scoop for both putting scoops of ice cream in a bowl and on a cone but it is a bit slow going for that.

PROS:Well designed for digging into hard ice cream

CONS: It is expensive for a scoop that others say is made in China.
