More About the Author

Paul Kemp enjoys good beer, good wine, good company, and a fine scotch every now and again. He writes sword and sorcery and space opera and works very hard to make them a fun ride.

While his mind is often in the fantastical fictional worlds, his body lives in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, with his wife Jennifer, his twin sons, his daughter, and their various and sundry pets.

He is a graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn and the University of Michigan law school. When he's not writing , he practices corporate law in Detroit. Yes, that does make him a tool of "the Man," for which he shall bear everlasting shame.

He hopes you enjoy his novels.

3.0 out of 5 stars Books 4,5 and 6 July 23, 2012

The 6 book series as a whole- A fun, Drow centric, fantasy adventure. Worth reading if you enjoy reading fantasy in general or Forgotten Realms in particular. I love how magic was used in these books. All the magic users struck me as very capable and deadly, which is not usually the case (for me) in many fantasy novels.
Jeggred was lame. Throughout the entire series he wants to attack certain other members of the party but he is constantly being held in check by one of the priestesses. For around 1,800 pages or so. -2 to Awesomeness.
But in general the series was fine. Nothing super awesome. Just another fun fantasy adventure.

Lisa Smedman- Extinction: I like her style. Extinction was a good read. Smedman writes the internal emotional drama of her characters very well. Hers might be my favorite of all 6 books. She sets up some of the characters in situations that get you really hoping/rooting for them. Sadly the next few authors don't take these threads in the directions I personally would liked to have seen.

Philip Athans- Annihilation: Athan's writes really good violence. Somehow the violence in this book was more visceral than in the other five. In general a fine read. Normal fantasy literature activities abound- nothing new, but that was fine. This book really feels like the end of the series to me. Almost everything felt resolved satisfactorily to me. I'm not claiming that everything WAS resolved, just that for me, for the most part, I would have been pretty ok with the series ending with this book. Especially after reading....

Paul S. Kemp- Resurrection: Complete Junk. Many people like Paul Kemp's style. They tout him as a fantastic author. I have read enough of his work myself to know that he isn't a bad author. I have found him to be a fantasy author that writes the same fantasy novels that most other authors write. Fun 300 page adventures where heroes slay monsters and cast spells and do all the other things that the characters in most other fantasy novel do. Nothing ground breaking. Which is fine. I don't look for stellar writing in my fantasy novels. Just fun adventures.
So what happened here? Resurrection was extremely boring for me. Plodding. A chore to read. It felt completely tacked on to the other five books.
The main-ish character throughout the series, Pharaun, was castrated in this novel. To the point that he was just meekly going along with whatever the priestesses wanted. Which wasn't even close to the smarmy, self assured, capable and thoroughly likeable character that had been created thus far.
And just how many times did Jeggred tense up, about to leap upon someone and rip them to shreds, only to have Danifae or Quenthal "put a restraining hand on his shoulder" or "shake her head at Jeggred" and keep him from attacking? 20? 40 times maybe? It could have been a drinking game for crying out loud. The end result here was that, at no point ever did I really believe that Jeggred was a threat. This was a hold over from the previous five novels though- Jeggred was never a threat. The priestesses stopped him from attacking the other members in the party so often that I just started skipping the next few sentences every time he "tensed up". Horrible.
So, the Anti-heroes get to the end of their mission, and while we DO end up learning what exactly happens with Lolth, I simply didn't care. I was so sick of spiders at that point that I was ready to buy stock in the company that makes Raid.
