Enough complaining about what songs were and were not hits...here is the down low (and what the perfect 2 CD R. Kelly compilation would be):

A previous reviewer complained about some tracks that were on this set. Considering that Kelly has so many hits, that is fair enough coz not everything can be fit on one volume. However to say that "Sex Me" is a filler and not a hit is totally wrong. It was R&B top 10, Pop top 20 and went Gold. In fact it charted higher than "Dedicated" which the reviewer insisted should have made it on the cd. Also "Fiesta" remix was indeed one of Kelly's biggest hits, being an R&B # 1 and pop #6, and was named the most popular (chart wise) R&B/Hip Hop song of 2001 by Billboard themselves. The songs from Born Into The 90s that made it here are also justified. "Honey Love" was the first of the R.'s 10 R&B #1 hits and "She's Got That Vibe" was the song that gave him his initial worldwide popularity. Every song on this set is contemporary R&B at its greatest and deserves to be on vol. 1 and I totally recommend this to any new or longtime R&B fan. Bring on BOBW2, The Secret album and R. In R&B Vol. 2!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Serious Reviewer, July 18, 2004

Let me tell you all, in a stream of words, what R. Kelly's new CD means. First of all, it's nice to see an artist not completely obscured by a golden shower of jewelry. Early leaks of this project said that Kelly piddled his studio time away; however, this young wiz has done it again.

Missing are the tinkling of bells or wind instruments so many artists choose to lend credence to their compilations; instead R. Kelly has dumped all his talent into a smooth blend of remixes that seem to just slide out of the man. Considering the extreme competion for the dwindled music market, it has to be a load off that his CD has done so well.

In closing, R. Kelly had done it again, rating a solid #2 in the world of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Want Some Old-School R. Kelly, This Is The One To Buy, April 25, 2004

From his 1991 debut, Born Into The 90's to his latest, Chocolate Factory, The R. In R&B Collection Vol.1 is a great compilation of R. Kelly's biggest hits. Now, let's get one thing clear: this is a 2-disc compilation of hits and remixes. Disc 1 has 18 #1 hits, some of them are newly recorded songs. My favorite songs has to be "Bump & Grind", the sensual, "Your Body's Calling", "Step Into The Name Of Love", "Down Low (Nobody Has To Know)", "Touched A Dream", the classic, "Honey Love", "When A Woman's Fed Up", "I Wish", "I Believe I Can Fly", and "You Remind Me of Something". All 10 of those tracks are R. Kelly's best works. Disc 2 is a disc of 4 remixes plus a bonus track, "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time", which is R. Kelly's greatest song ever. The new mixes of "Bump & Grind" and "Down Low" are better than the original versions. R. Kelly really needs to release a remix album. To my advantage, this special remix bonus CD is just an EP. This collection is missing some great tracks. There is totally nothing from the R. Kelly/ Jay-Z collabration, Best Of Both Worlds or the bootlegged, Loveland. I would've added "Get This Money featuring Jay-Z", "Half On A Baby", "Heaven I Need A Hug", "Did You Ever Think", "One Man" (from the album R.), "I Wish (Remix)", "I Can't Sleep (If I)", "Feelin' On Yo Booty", and "Only The Loot Can Make Me Happy". I was a little disappointed, but this collection is still hot. The R. In R&B Collection Vol.1 is a little incomplete, but Vol.2 will probably complete the whole R. Kelly saga. Buy this essential collection with TP-2.Com and the double-disc opus, R. The R. In R&B Collection Vol.1 is a must buy. A-

5.0 out of 5 stars A decade of decadence..............., March 20, 2004

This review is from: R in R&B Collection 1 (Audio CD)
Say what you want about R. Kelly (and believe me, you've earned the right to), but there is no figure more important in modern R&B in the last 10 years than Robert Kelly. NONE. Though he has only two classic albums(Twelve Play and TP2.com),he has more hits than Bobby Brown has had on Whitney Houston(bad analogy;I know). But some songs are missing; where's "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time"? Where's the "I Wish" remix? Where's "Feelin' On Your Booty"? Other than that, this is perfect; on great touch is the bonus CD, which has hard to find renixes which were only avaliable on B-sides and soundtracks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great album BUT...A HUGE FLAW, March 2, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: R in R&B Collection 1 (Audio CD)
Everysong on this album is great, R Kelly has such a unique and solid sound. All his hits are here, everything from Bump & Grind to I Wish. BUT there is one huge problem, these are all the clean versions of the songs. Each song contains all the annoying skips and silences. Its so irritaing, like listening to a scratched CD. WHY didnt they release an explicit version like all of his other albums? If you can get over the skips and pauses due to the edits, then this is a great buy. but as for me i would rather just make my own mix with the albums i own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Missing one of the artist's best but...., March 16, 2004
This review is from: R in R&B Collection 1 (Audio CD)
The liner notes penned by Rob Marriott and the stunning photos adorning the sleeve, as well as the bevy of songs from the artist's twelve-year (and counting) reign as one of contemporary R & B/hip hop's best make this disc an essential purchase.

Yeah, he left out "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time", but most greatest hits packages are not all-inclusive.

And the eighteen found in this package are SOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

5.0 out of 5 stars A decent collection of R Kelly's Greatest Hits, December 13, 2003
By
J. Highsmith (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: R in R&B Collection 1 (Audio CD)
If you take a look at R Kelly's career in full, you can't possibly come up with a Greatest Hits collection in one CD. What I will applaud Jive Records for doing is for taking 15 of his best songs and surrounding them with 3 new tracks. These days ladies and gentlemen, it's all about the money. Unfortunately, that's the way it is. I have all of R Kelly's CDs and if you are a music collector like I am, you'll still buy the Greatest Hits collection for the 3 new songs.

"Born In The 90s"- The 4 best songs on this CD were "Honey Love", "She's Got That Vibe", "Dedicated" and "Slow Dance". I would have found a way for "Dedicated" to make it but when you are working with 15 tracks of a Greatest Hits CD, something is not going to make the cut.

"12 Play"- "Your Body's Callin'", "Bump N Grind" and "Sex Me" (Part 1) make the cut. That is a good representation of 12 Play, but you also have the slow jams "It Seems Like You're Ready", "For You" and the title track that would also work here.

"R Kelly"- "You Remind Me Of Something" and "Down Low (Nobody Has To Know) make the cut. The only other songs that I could see that could possibly make the cut are "I Can't Sleep", "Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby" and "(You To Be) Be Happy" featuring The Notorious BIG.

"R"- "When A Woman's Fed Up", "I'm Your Angel" and Space Jam's "I Believe I Can Fly" make the cut. "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time" is on the Bonus Limited Edition CD and I have a personal bias on "Spendin' Money" and "Looking For Love" which are two of my favorite songs on the double CD.

"TP-2.Com"- "I Wish" and "Fiesta (Remix)" make the cut. It would have been hard to pick from the other slow jams on this CD. "Strip For You", "The Greatest Sex", and "I Didn't Mean It" are classic R Kelly slow jams.

"Chocolate Factory"- "Ignition (Remix)" and "Step In The Name Of Love (Remix) make the cut. Seeing that this CD was released in 2003 these were the best two songs to choose from. "I'll Never Leave", "Forever" and "Heart Of A Woman" are classic R Kelly slow jams.

Between the 3 new songs, "Thoia Thoing" and "Touched A Dream" are the best in my opinion. R Kelly's and Wyclef's "Ghetto Religion" was a little too much for me. "Thoia Thoing" is a nice uptempo jam that R Kelly released and made a video for and "Touched A Dream" is a nice midtempo jam that sounds like it was on the unreleased "Loveland" CD, which is where the real version of Joe's "More & More" and a classic R Kelly jam "Joy" was supposed to be on. On the Limited Edition Cd, you get remixes of "Bump N Grind", "Down Low", "Gotham City" and one of my personal favorites the "I Can't Sleep (Remix), as well as "R's", "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time".

If you want songs like Sparkle and R Kelly's "Be Careful" and R Kelly and Aaliyah's "Your Body's Callin'" Remix you'll just have to create your own version of R Kelly's Greatest Hits like I plan to do. Otherwise, I commend R Kelly and Jive Records for making an excellent reprsentation of R Kelly's Greatest Hits.
