Great Collection of Rare & Not-So-Rare, March 25, 2008

I have been buying the Bear Family CDs "Blowing the Fuse" for the past year. They are quality products with extensive liner notes. Well, in this set I think Bear Family might meet its match. I purchased volumes 1 and 2 of 1956 to see what they were about. This is a fantastic compilation.
The R&B Years 1956 is a 2 CD set crammed with 56 songs. These songs range from extremely rare to everyday (Little Richard, Chuck Berry). But at least a third of the songs included are ones I had not run across in my wanderings through CD listings. If you collect vintage R&B, this is a series for you. The sound quality is amazing for most tracks. My only quibble is that the liner notes are rather perfunctory. Little information is given about the vocalists and no songwriting credits are included. But the wealth of material is astonishing - 56 songs on volume one and 56 songs on volume two. Over 100 songs from 1956 R&B and Blues greats. Bear Family watch your backs!
