Editorial Reviews

History was made the night of March 13, 2008, when the members of R.E.M. stepped onto the Austin City Limits stage for the first time a special milestone for the longest-running music show in American television. Almost three decades into their career and just days before the release of their 14th studio album Accelerate, on a breezy Texas day amidst the buzz of South by Southwest that week, they gave the intimate audience of 350 a concert experience that Pitchfork Magazine called amazing and USA Today dubbed a special treat. For the first time since that night, here s an expanded performance for you to enjoy, not the edited down version from the PBS broadcast.

1. Living Well Is The Best Revenge
2. Man-Sized Wreath
3. Drive
4. So. Central Rain
5. Accelerate
6. Fall On Me
7. Hollow Man
8. Electrolite
9. Houston
10. Supernatural Superserious
11. Bad Day
12. Losing My Religion
13. I m Gonna DJ
14. Horse To Water
15. Imitation Of Life
16. Until The Day Is Done
17. Man On The Moon

I've been reading some blogs where critics bash this concert for being too Accelerate-sided but in my opinion this is not a bad thing.

I enjoyed R.E.M.'s album Accelerate, which came out in 2008. Some songs whose lyrics I have memorised appeared in that CD: 'Hollow Man', 'Houston', 'Supernatural Superserious', 'I'm Gonna DJ' and many others.

R.E.M. live from Austin, TX is heavy on Accelerate because the band were promoting the album at the time. Nine, out of seventeen songs (half the concert) are included in Accelerate. In fact, in you haven't purchased Accelerate, I would highly recommend that you get it through amazon.com (or however you prefer, just buy it).

Of course there are songs from other albums as well, but I am not an R.E.M.-ologist to identify them (though 'Drive' and 'Man on the Moon' are easily recognised as 'Automatic for the People' material). The pop hit 'Losing my religion' is also included.

The beauty of this DVD is precisely its 'Accelerate' content and I would recommend this video as the perfect companion to that album. My only regret is that 'Sing for the Submarine' is not in this PBS concert.

If you are an R.E.M. fan, this is an excellent addition to your collection. The group plays new and old songs without a hitch.

For the most part, this is a really good performance. But that's all it is: a performance. If you're looking for band interviews or behind the scene extras, look elsewhere. For the most part R.E.M. sticks to themselves and their music, but they do explain the meanings behind a few of their recent songs, and Michael Stipe even invite 2 small kids in the audience to climb on stage. Their music selection is strong, although a vast majority of it is obviously taken from Accelerate, as this was recorded only a few weeks before Accelerate was released.

While it's nice to see different songs like Fall On Me being played, Drive seems very awkward being placed between the loud Man-Sized Wreath and the up-tempo So. Central Rain. However, the music is still top-notch R.E.M., and they never miss a beat. Although I prefer their Live At The Olympia CD for its great variety in songs, Live from Austin is still strong in its own way, even if it's very short compared to their last 2 live releases.

I couldn't wait for this DVD to come out. Terrific performance I first saw when televised and if it weren't made into a DVD, that would have been insane! So glad to own it and love it every time I watch it.

This is a fabulous performance late in REM's career. It shows they still "got it" LOL. Great quality performance and I love the banter between the songs. It is a must have for the new or long time REM fan. They all sound and look great. Love Mike Mills' voice!

R.E.M. is in the ROCK n ROLL HALL OF FAME.

Pretty much everything they do now will be a big seller and gravy for thier careers.

Hopefully Michael Stipe and friends will never lose their Rock N Roll edge.

This concert doesn't disappoint... I didn't expect it to.

LONG LIVE ROCK MY FRIENDS.
