Really Good. Doggystyle 2004? You Decide.,
This review is from: R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece (Audio CD)
Many have called Snoop Dogg's Rhythm and Gangsta: The Masterpiece his best release since his 1993 debut Doggystyle. Doggystyle was a classic and Rhythm & Gangsta may very well be the 2004 answer to Doggystyle.
Snoop is the same pretty much. He still has his laid back flow, and his influence from the 70's is still very present. Snoop also is still talking about "chuuuch." This is a musical album, thus the title Rhythm and Gangsta implies. Many of the songs have such an R&B feel ("Ups & Downs," "Perfect") that you can really clap your hands and get your groove on. Even the songs with an R&B feel, still have gangsta lyrics. One thing I found very irresponsible on the album is Snoops frequent reference to the Crypt street gang. Snoop is such a huge international star, he really doesn't need to give shout out's to a street gang. "Drop It Like It's Hot" is undeniably an anthem and one of the best, if not the best, song on the album. His song with 50 Cent, "Oh No," is very hot. The way that Pharrell sings SNOOP real slow makes this song the modern day "What's My Name." This song has heat, but many of the other songs are mellow songs you can ride to like, "The Bidness." The song with Justin Timberlake and Charlie Wilson "Signs" is another mellow song with a 70's flavor. "Girl Like U" featuring Nelly has a real radio friendly feel and also includes Pharrell singing on the hook. Snoop has some real interesting songs about the opposite sex on this album such as, "I'm Threw Witchu," and "Can U Control Yo Hoe." "I'm Threw Witchu" is a really terrible song, perhaps it is a skit or a joke. Snoop is still rapping about getting high, he hasn't changed much. The weed anthem on this album is "Let's Get Blown," which features Pharrell singing on the chorus. Being that The Neptunes co-produced this album with Snoop, Pharrell appears on several tracks un-credited on the back cover.Rhythm & Gangsta is a pretty hot album. Snoop Dogg and The Neptunes make good music. Musically and productionwise, this is the best Snoop Dogg album since his days with Dr. Dre. Guests on the album include Pharrell, The Bee Gees, Charlie Wilson, Soopafly, Bootsy Collins, Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent, Nelly, Lil Jon, and Trina.

So Perfect,

This review is from: R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece (Audio CD)
I'm a new user on amazon and this is my first review so I got to do a review of the best album of 2004. Snoop reach the level that is reached in 1993 with Doggystyle. I am a big fan of Snoop Dogg. I love is style.
Ok this is what I think of the songs: I Love To Give you Light - 4/5 Bang Out - 4/5 Drop it Like it's hot - 6/5 Can I Get a Flicc with You - 4/5 Ups & Downs - 4.5/5 The Bidness - 4.5/5 Snoop D.O. Double G. - 4/5 Let's Get Blow - 5/5 Step Yo Game Up - 4.5/5 Perfect - 5/5 Wballz Fresh Pair of Panties - 3.5/5 Promise I - 4/5 Oh No - 6/5 Can You Control Yo H** - 6/5 Signs - 4.5/5 I'm Threw Witchu - 4.5/5 Pass It Pass It - 5/5 Girl Like U - 4.5/5 No Thang On Me - 4.5/5 One more thing, I notice that one guy is posting comments with different names talking bad things about Snoop and giving one star to the album. I think you should find who he is and probite him of doing reviews. Stop doing that. You already rated the CD and you already did you're review. That's sad. Do something else. Bottom line I think this is great. The name says it better: "R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece". Snoop is here to stay forever and ever

Old Snoop Flow, New Grown Up Lyrics,

This review is from: R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece (Audio CD)
I'm glad Snoop finally found something new to inspire him, this new album is the best Snoop has ever been. I don't know if you can credit this to the Neptunes or Snoop actually writting his rhymes instead of getting in the studio and freestyling. I have been buying his albums since Doggystyle and I'm glad he finally came with an awesome album. I appreciate this one Snoop, I've been playing it back to back like you could play albums in the old days. When the album first came out on iTunes, I was going to see if there were a few good tracks, but when I was done listening to the previews I jumped up and down and went upstairs to wake my wife, "Snoop has done it!" I exclaimed. I was excited about the album, but I refused to just get the digital version, I absolutely had to have the album, inserts and all. Indeed, Snoop has made an album he can be proud of.

Masterpiece not quite but strong heat from Snoop DO Dizzle,

This review is from: R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece (Audio CD)
Although better than its predecessor (Paid Da Cost to be Da Boss), R & G - The Masterpiece still fails to live up to it's billing. Yes, this is the most consistent piece of work Snoop has produced since his landmark debut, Doggystyle. But something is lacking. The Neptunes produced tracks anchor The Masterpiece. Drop it Like it's Hot's laid back beat allows Snoop to showcase his master flow while Signs (feat. Justin Timberlake?) is actually one of the better songs on this cd. Snoop goes old school gangsta less often but more effectively on standouts The Bidness and Step Yo Game Up (Feat. Lil' Jon). Even DJ Easy Dick makes a return appearance on the interlude WBALLZ. Oh No (Feat. 50 Cent) is rather predictable and uninspired, as is Bang Out. There are some incendiary flashes on R & G such as Can You Control Your Hoe where Snoop lets everyone know it's Miller Time, as he and his homies are about to go hard on these biatches. I personally think this song is hilarious but I'm sure some women won't be laughing. Ups and Downs features a fantastic sample of the Bee Gees and stands among the strongest tracks on The Masterpiece. So, eventhough it's not the Masterpiece this record is a nice addition to Snoop's catalog and probably stands out as the second best overall album he's produced. Recommended.

It's clear to see from the reviews here that Snoop Dogg still has a devoted fan base, and it's also evident that most of the less-than-four-star ratings for this album are getting a lot of unhelpful votes. But I have to be honest and say that this album, R&G, really isn't doing it for me.
After listening to this album, I had to ask myself if Snoop put this album out because he wanted to or because he was bored. And I really don't understand how people can say this is better than Doggystyle. But while there's nothing really mind-blowing here, there are still some songs that are good for dancing to, like "Drop It Like It's Hot" (if people are surprised I'm saying that after reading my `2004 Awards' guide, I said the song was overrated; I didn't say it was wack) and also "Oh No" with 50 Cent. The only real problem with the latter is the screaming of "G-UNIT!" at the end -- but 50 doesn't say it; Snoop does, and he sounds ridiculous. But there are so many problems on this album that it's annoying. For one thing, as another reviewer mentioned, there are way too many guest stars on here, and they really don't bring anything to the table, like Nelly on the filler track "Girl Like U". And even Bootsy Collins can't save the stupid "Can I Get a Flicc Witchu". Bootsy also shows up on the last track, "No Thang On Me", but Snoop is hardly even in it, and when he IS, he's just talking instead of rapping. The same goes for "I'm Threw Witchu", where he's only talking for a little at the beginning before Soopafly desecrates the rest of the song. Things also get strange when you come to "Ups & Downs" with the Bee Gees. Actually, the Bee Gees aren't really in it; the music is just taken from their song "Love You Inside and Out". And "Step Yo Game Up" (with Lil Jon and Trina) is confusing because the chorus is calling out to wack emcees while the verses are about having sex (but who is Trina to tell someone to step their game up, anyway?). One song I really don't care for is "Can U Control Yo H**", not necessarily because of its title, but because it talks about smacking women up. I know it's just a song, but it still bothers me. And "Fresh Pair of Panties On" is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard (starting with its title). But another flaw the album has is how formulaic things can get. There's the obligatory song Snoop named after himself ("Snoop D.O. Double G") and the obligatory Gap-Band-sampled-tracks-featuring-Charlie-Wilson ("Signs", also featuring Justin Timberlake; and "Perfect"). Even though Charlie can still sing, his presence still makes things monotonous. Snoop Dogg can show that he can stay in the game, but I just don't think he has it any more (by the way, 213's album also proves that). He might still be able to go platinum, but this 78-minute album isn't the masterpiece he claims it to be. Anthony Rupert

2004 Doggystyle,
By Charles Robinson "Omega" (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece (Audio CD)
R&G is, with no doubt, the 2004 Doggystyle. This cd got it all and plus WBALLZ with DJ EazyDick. The producion is expetacular, as usual, by the Neptunes. Snoop made a good choice to sign for Neptunes label, Star Trak. Now Doggystyle Records and Star Trak Records form a powerful force. Snoop still got that laid back flow and that gangsta style but now with more mature and good lyrics. "Bang Out" is very gangsta. "Drop it Like it's Hot" resembles with "What's My Name"."Let's Get Blown" is very smooth and "Oh No" is awsome. "Pass It Pass It" take us back to the old G-Funk days. Snoop changed since 1992 but for better and now he's a legend. It's funny because most of the singers that become legends don't need to make very good albums but Snoop created a Masterpiece. That's why I bought this album and I think you should buy it too.

Piece of Art,

This review is from: R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece (Audio CD)
R&G or like I love to call it POA(piece of art). Snoop Dogg maybe known about his actors rolls his pimp style and Doggystyle(one of best classics of all time) but is known too about being a legend like everyone is saying. He now has all the rap game. Everyone wants to do songs with him and everybody loves him. This album keeps Snoop legacy alive because just like Doggystyle when you hear the first 3 songs of the cd you just want more till the end. In this days thats very hard for an artist to do but Snoop still gots it. "Drop it Like it's Hot" was is first single to hit the #1 spot on the charts and with a point because is an amazing song, one of Snoop's best ones. The producion from The Neptunes is amazing but Snoop should do a cd produced by them and by Dr. Dre. This cd proves his title because it's a Masterpiece and for Snoop is just another classic.
All songs are good and iPoD worthy. Snoop Dogg's masterpiece is a classic.Wonderful work

Wonder,
By Jack Foley "Hip-Hop reviewer" (Pennsylvania, Washington, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece (Audio CD)
ONE of rap's true legends, Snoop Dogg, goes some way to justifying that reputation with his latest album, R&G (Rhythm and Gangsta), a heavyweight affair in all senses of the word.
Featuring collaborations with the likes of Pharrell, The Neptunes, Lil' Jon, Jelly Roll and Supafly, not to mention Justin Timberlake and Nelly, the album contains 20 tracks - most of which epitomise the smooth, laidback Snoop Dogg style, as well as the bad boy attitude which has proved such an inspiration to others. Lead track, Drop It Like Its Hot, became a monster of a hip-hop single, featuring a hook that instantly buries itself in your brain, with Pharrell rapping the first verse over a characteristically beat-driven Neptunes production - complete with a brand new style of beat box. It is already all over US radio reaching an audience of 19 million, and making it the biggest rap record currently playing State-side. And it's an appropriate metaphor for the rest of the long-player, thanks to the effortlessly cool vibe surrounding most of it. Let's Get Blown, for instance, reverberates with that smooth Neptunes style, while Perfect, an upbeat ballad featuring a delicious guest appearance from Charlie Wilson, recalls the brilliance of Beautiful, from Snoop's last album. The only album does occasionally veer into ultra bad-boy territory, such as the borderline-offensive, Step Yo Game Up (featuring Lil Jon and Trina), which features countless references to b*tches, n*ggers and motherf*ckers, but then I guess this wouldn't be a Snoop Dogg album without a bit of bite to it. Elsewhere, the Justin Timberlake-Charlie Wilson collaboration, Signs, is a suitably upbeat track that invites some serious dancefloor activity (courtesy of its funky style), while Nelly stamps his style all over Girl Like U, which could well become another of the album's monster singles. UK listeners also benefit from the bonus track, Riders on the Storm, a curiously likeable rap cover of The Doors' classic, which features a welcome sample of the original. Rhythm & Gangsta works best when keeping it smooth and playing to the Neptunes style, ensuring that Snoop Dogg remains the king of cool on the rap circuit. The album, it's named Masterpiece and I think it achieve that status. |
