THE KING OF R&B IS BACK!,
By Francisco Pérez (Sweden) - See all my reviews
This review is from: R (Audio CD)
The best CD (or CD:s)I own is R Kelly's "R". No one can beat this masterpiece. Except, of course, the soulman himself. One song I can't get enough of is the fantastic "Half On A Baby". Seems like heaven appears while hearing it. Other great songs are "Did You Ever Think" for its extremely original text and beats, "When A Woman's Fed Up" one of many truths about women, "Don't Put Me Out", " V.I.P." the one about jealousy , "Reality", "2nd Kelly", "Down Low Double Life", the best ballad of the year "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time" , "Suicide" for its blues, "Home Alone" the cool party song ... the list just goes on and on. Only one thing disappointed me: the CD didn't include "Be Careful", which can be found on Sparkle's CD (produced entirely by R Kelly). I like both the fast and the slow songs, but the slow touches my heart and soul every time. I bought the CD about one year ago, and i still listen to it. If you want timeless soul then look no further. If you want music that never gets boring buy this one. R Kelly is without a doubt the 90's biggest R&B and soulartist.

R.KELLY IS THE MAN!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: R (Audio CD)
When it comes to the king of r+b soul you have to give up respect for this man. he is truly a musical genius. Just hearing seven tracks off his new CD R. makes waiting for it to come out even harder. With tracks like half on a baby, Element of suprise, and I'm your angel, he will be sure to be bigger than before. I like how he seperated his double disk set. One Cd is slow jams and ballads while the other is hip/hop and r+b with appearances by Nas, Jay-z, and Foxy Brown. The track with nas is tight. This will probably be R.kelly's best and I can't wait to hear the rest of his songs. His remixing and producing skills are a lot tighter now and that is what will make this CD one of his best ones yet. If you haven't heard of R.Kelly this a good time to go out and get him. (A must have for your music collection!!!)

.... Too many songs,
By J. Highsmith (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews

Don't get me wrong, this CD is slammin' at times. R Kelly takes you back to "12 Play" with some of his slow jams. The slow jams from "Born Into The 90s" is what got Mr. Kelly known in the business. "Honey Love", "Slow Dance" and "Dedicated" were all songs to remember. "12 Play" was his breakthrough album. His slow jams were so tight that people didn't even bother to criticize some of the fast songs that you had to fast forward in order to get to the slow songs. "It Seems Like You're Ready", "Your Body's Callin'", and "For You" have always been favorites of mine. On his 3rd album it seemed like R Kelly was fighting between his religious beliefs and the formula that made his previous albums work. He still found time to make "Down Low (Nobody Has To Know"), "I Can't Sleep", "(You To Be) Happy" w/The Notorious B.I.G. and "Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby". On "R" the best moments are when R Kelly stays true to his old "12 Play" formula. Most of the slow jams are on point and are worth the double CD's price. I'll put "When A Woman's Fed Up", "One Man", "Looking 4 Love", "Suicide", "Etcetera","If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time" and "I'm Your Angel" w/Celine Dion against almost any other R&B artists slow jams and R Kelly will be #1 against most artists. My personal favorites are "Home Alone" w/Keith Murray, "Spendin' Money", "When A Woman's Fed Up" which is the best song, "One Man", "Suicide", "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time" and "Looking For Love". I agree with reviewers "I.B." and "Tony" when they say that this should've been one CD. Even though this is a tight double CD collection, they're a lot of "filler" songs on the CD. "2nd Kelly","V.I.P", "Down Low Double Life" (How many versions of the song can you make), "Dollar Bill" w/Foxy Brown (R Kelly is trying to rap again) and the forgettable "The Opera" which never should've been made. This is the reason why I gave this CD a 4 instead of a 5. This is still a quality CD. If you're a R Kelly fan, this is a must have for your collection.

Lots of Material Here,

R is a 2 cd, 29 song set. It has some nice slow jams, as well as some upbeat numbers. Lots of collabs with ppl like Keith Murray, Jay-Z, Vegas Cats, Noreaga, Cam'ron, Foxy Brown, Crucial Conflict, Nas, and Celine Dion. The album deals with a lot of the pressures in life, mainly money and such. Some of my faves include Spendin Money, If IM Wit You, Half On A Baby, When A Woman's Fed Up, One Man, Suicide, Etcetera, If I COuld Turn Back the Hands of Time, What I Feel/Issues, VIP, Did YOu Ever Think, 2nd Kelly, Looking for Love, Dancing With A Rich Man, Im Your Angel and I Believe I Can Fly. He produced, arranged and wrote all the songs on here, proving he is one of the most talented artists out there. Go out and get this cd!

Pretty Hot...,
By
This review is from: R (Audio CD)
R. Kelly isn't the best singer, neither is he the best song writer. But this album has come together fairly well. Kelly's prior albums have been basically about how much he loves the ladies. This one is not only about that, but how much money he wants to spend on them, how bad they should want him since he has money, and how he wants to get them pregnant (basically). Another very prelavent theme is about how all the other men in the world are jealous of him and player/baller hates him becasue he is rich. Poor R. Kelly, boo hoo, everyone believes he can fly and is buying his CDs and paying for his big house and $6,000 Versace outfits and $300,000 Bentleys. Anyway, this album isn't anything so great that it needs to be on two CDs, a fair portion of it is just high-quality filler, cookie-cutter ballads with so-so hooks and pretty guitar riffs, a la Sparkle's "Be Careful." He also recycles the melody from the chorus of "G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T." by Changing Faces, which he wrote, on three separate songs, which is sort of shocking considering how seriously he takes himself. But the bangin' tracks are really bangin' and even on the less than perfect stuff there are innovations. The first disc is the best, the second is okay. If "VIP" was on the first disc I'd rarely play the second. "Home Alone," "Spendin' Money," "Suicide," "We Ride" and "When A Woman's Fed Up" are other favorites of mine. Since this is a double album it's too bad you have to pay extra for this since a lot of people will only be listening to half of it more or less, most of the time. But if you don't mind dropping the cash then you're sure to find a few new favorite songs on this joint.

R. Just keeps on comin',
By "luvchld2" (Baltimore, MD) - See all my reviews

R. never seems to amaze me whenever he releases an album. "Born into the 90's" was excellent, 12 Play was great, R. Kelly was a classic (in my mind) and now R. has returned for another run. My picks as best on the album are this: If Im wit u- very good song if u love guitar backgrounds than u will love this. only problem is he is tryin to rap in the start but once u get passed that it is womderful One Man ranks among one of his best songs very powerful and deep beautiful background and very impressive flow Looking for Love a true R/B song. u could sing it to your mate but he sang it to God Breathtaking Down Low Double Life good follow up to original once again shows his doggish ways good song This cd is above average but can get drawn out at times. Many meaningless songs like "Dollar Bill", "The Opera", "2nd Kelly". But I would much rather have a R. kelly "waste" song than any other artist. Sleeper pick: VIP took me awhile before it grew on me at least give it a chance regardless of the beginning.

Rated R. for ...realness..tight!,

This review is from: R (Audio CD)
This cd from R.Kelly is good. Iknow some people say they heard it already but ...if u listen a couple times u will hear how fresh some of these beats and songs r. I think he really did it with this one. He is already 5 Xplatnium and counting. I heard he also has a new cd coming out soon. Since he made this he been busy making hits for others..so it should be good to see whta he's coming with next. The first disc caught me first ..the second has a couple but took a while to catch on to me. Some songs might sound like he's bragging..but I think he was just trying t to "Keep it real"...but songs like "If I could turn" show how much he can get into with his songs. Don't sleep on kelly.......listen for yourself and u be the judge.Get it!!

When R Kelly was king part 3,
By Nuisance "the rebel" (Miami) - See all my reviews
This review is from: R (Audio CD)
4 years after what is probably his best work to date. R Kelly dropped this double album release in 1998. The problem with this double album is the problem with most double albums: some songs are just filler or one disc is better than the other. Dont get me wrong, this album has plenty of great tracks but there are filler on this album that should have been shaved off. The problematic disc is Disc 2.
Disc 1: The best of both discs. I cant recall a song that I skip on here. Home Alone feat Keith Murray was a dope party jam. Spendin Money, If I'm Wit You and Only Loot Can Make Me Happy are good as well. R Kelly always excels at the slow songs so tracks Half On A Baby, Get Up On A Room, If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time and Etcetera are his bread and butter. R Kelly makes songs that the ladies can relate to with the excellent One Man and When A Woman's Fed Up. R Kelly vents his rage in What I Feel/Issues. This disc is more rotational than the second disc and gives this double album some replay value. Disc 2: The lesser of both discs. I'll start by mentioning the positive aspects of this disc. Reality, Down Low Double Life, Looking For Love and Dancing With A Rich Man are pretty good tracks and showcase R Kelly's genius. I Believe I Can Fly and I'm Your Angel feat Celine Dion are beautiful songs and the fact that the latter made an awesomely bad list by some corny ragazine that would never nominate an Eminem track much less a Shady Records artist track is questionable to say the least. You know you suck when your favoritism wont allow you to see that Eminem and the whole Shady Records roster made plenty of awesomely bad records. At any rate the few songs I mentioned are the only songs on this album worth talking about. The ludicrous amounts of filler make Disc 2 unbearable. The Chase, V.I.P, Did You Ever Think, 2nd Kelly and Money Makes The World Go Round feat Nas are prime examples of that statement. Ghetto Queen feat Crucial Conflict is one of the worst R&B/rap collaborations of all time. R Kelly couldnt have been that vainglorious to have thought that that track was a good idea. Dollar Bill features boring rhymes from R Kelly and Foxy Brown. Despite these obvious flaws R Kelly's double album is still a noteworthy release from an artist that showed you his true genius time and time again before all his troubles caused him to make sloppy music. Standouts on Disc 1: HOME ALONE, SPENDIN MONEY, IF I'M WIT YOU, HALF ON A BABY, WHEN A WOMAN'S FED UP, GET UP ON A ROOM, SUICIDE, IF I COULD TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME and ETCETERA. Standouts on Disc 2: REALITY, DOWN LOW DOUBLE LIFE, LOOKING FOR LOVE, DANCING WITH A RICH MAN, I'M YOU ANGEL and I BELIEVE I CAN FLY.
