Too cute,

I admit to being a foodie, and Elton Brown (host of Good Eats) said I HAD to have one of these, so... I could have purchased a much less expensive version, but let's face it, four and twenty may be an awkard number, but one cute little pie bird was a must have. I will not bake fruit pie again without this treasure. It really does vent the pie, and prevent the juices from spilling out and burning in my oven. Pie bird - yes. This one is up to you, but I think it's too cute.

Who thought I would need a pie bird?,

I saw Alton Brown make a huge apple pie on the Food Network and he recommended this pie bird. I thought it was a pretty silly gadget since it would only have one purpose but Alton has never steered me wrong before ... So I looked it up on Amazon and ordered it. When I used it the first time I was astonished at how clever that little bird is! By allowing the excess steam inside the pie to be expelled in the baking process it left a non-soggy pie. You know how in fruit pies the bottom crust does not bake and becomes kind of gummy? Well, my little birdie takes care of that. Another thing Alton mentioned was to bake the pie on the very bottom of the oven. I keep my pizza stone there and now I bake perfect pies every time. I plan to give these little birdies as presents to my pie baking friends. For the first time I am baking a really professional looking product. Yum.

I saw this on Good Eats on Food Network and decided to get one for the Christmas pie. This really works! I also followed the suggestion to use a deep dish pie tart as well. People were in love with the pie! Well worth it!
