Product Description

DVD features Chiwa Saito (Actor), Rachel Hirschfeld (Actor), Koji Masunari (Director), Taliesin Jaffe (Director).

As the broadcast version of Read or Die continues, it shifts to a darker mood than either the original OVA or the previous episodes. Michele, Maggie, and Anita, who were serving as bodyguards to novelist Nenene Sumiregawa, suddenly undertake perilous missions for the mysterious Dokusensha organization. They're pitted against a vampire-like professor, an actor who can impersonate everyone and anyone, and an English scientist conducting bizarre experiments on human subjects. These villains and Junior, a boy at Anita's school who looks and sounds like a girl, are all somehow linked to a rare volume stolen from a British library. Collectors would pay $1 billion for "The Book of Pulsing Flesh." The filmmakers may eventually succeed in tying these disparate elements and moods into coherent story, but it's going to be a formidable challenge. (Rated 13 and older: violence, ethnic stereotypes, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth Your Time November 16, 2004
Read or Die TV is rapidly becoming my favorite anime series. The premise is original and fresh, the characters multi-dimensional, and the storyline compelling. Although watching the original Read or Die isn't absolutely necessary to understand the TV series, it is helpful as background information (and is compelling in it's own right).

What really sets this series apart for me are the characters, perhaps because I am a bookworm as well and can identify with them. Additionally, the stereotype of the wimpy bookworm is turned on its head by the butt kicking abilities of the Paper Masters. Great action, great story, great characters -- this series is a winner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever writing! November 27, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is an excellent series if you like thoughtful characters and clever stories. Classical anime in many ways, but enough twists and turns to keep you watching! One of the better series. I bought this edition to complete my library as I had a flawed factory disc (from Malaysia?), which may not have been OEM. Subtitles were good, not perfect, but the dubbing was bad as usual. I prefer to listen to the subtleties of the Japanese language anyways. If you like mysteries, not much violence, dedication to family and friends, you won't be disappointed.
