Rebirth of the RTS Genre Through Deception
Developed by Eugen Systems, R.U.S.E is a WWII based Real-time Strategy (RTS) game that is set to refresh the genre through the introduction of battlefield deception on a major scale. Of course the existence of deception as a tactic is as old as the RTS genre itself, but the approach to this taken by R.U.S.E is far beyond anything that has come before it. Instead of the one-off ploys and minor misdirections enacted at players' discretion seen in other games, R.U.S.E. raises deception to the level of an integral battlefield tactic. Deceptive tactics, known as "Ruses," allow players to do things like bluff enemies in order to lead your nation's army to victory, camouflage your troops, lure your opponent with decoy units, sabotage his logistics and more. Ruses are built into the game's mechanics in the form of "cards" that can be played at particular times. There are many of these to choose from and use in accordance with particular scenarios and unit abilities. Just a few of these include:

  • Radio Silence - A way to hides all units in a sector from an enemy intelligence system.
  • Spy Plan - Reveals all unidentified units in the sector and keeps spy units hidden from the enemy detection system as long as they do not leave the affected area.
  • Decryption - Reveals all enemy orders in a chosen sector.
  • Decoy Offensive - Creates 5 decoy units to simulate an actual attack, drawing enemy forces out.
  • Camouflage Net - Hides buildings and production facilities from enemy intelligence resulting in possible flanking scenarios by unexpected forces and unseen resources.
Dimension is another fundamental aspect of R.U.S.E. that highlights the importance of deception. The IRISZOOM Engine, utilized by R.U.S.E. displays maps a hundred times larger than in traditional RTS games, which raises strategy to an unprecedented scale and gives deception a lot more depth. With the zoom, you are able to both command your units as a chief-in-command and manage your troops at a tactical level as a ground officer; for example by deploying a fake offensive on your opponent’s HQ while carefully hiding your infantry in villages to ambush the surrounding tanks.

Playable Factions and Multiplayer
Because R.U.S.E. is set during the WWII era, playable factions seen within the game are reflected in the combatants of that conflict. Centered around the European theater, players can expect see nations including: US, UK, Germany, USSR, Italy and France. Each have specific units, strengths, tendencies and tactical deceptive leanings. Also, since fooling a human player is very different than doing the same against AI, in addition to a deep 23-mission single player campaign, multiplayer options play a major role in R.U.S.E., to the tune of up to 8 players getting together and battling it out online across huge battlefields. In fact, multiplayer is the dominant mode available in R.U.S.E. and players will be able to set up games with their own preferences thanks to several parameters (number of available ruses, conditions of victory, game time, 1939, 1942 or 1945 mode, etc.).

Key Game Features

  • RTS action that includes becoming a master of deception on the battlefield using tactics like decoys, camouflage, radio silence, deciphering to mislead enemies.
  • Experience war as a strategist commanding a huge spectrum of mechanized and infantry units.
  • Choose between six Axis or Allied powers with specific units and abilities and tactical leanings.
  • Test your strategic skills with fast-paced, addictive adversarial skirmishes, up to 8 players.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally a game where APM don't grantee success, January 28, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
It seems like most of the RTSes which are created around multyplayer have a mission: to increase you mouse dexterity as seen in the crazy Star Craft 300+ APM player's videos. Well news flash, I am lazy. So if you are like me, and interested in a little slower game, a game where you have time to think: RUSE is finally here!

The game is obviously created around multyplayer so don't expect much from the single player's campaign, but multyplayer is done beautifully. The game is all about strategic placements, secret reserves and knowing what your opponent is doing. Sometimes 10 minutes will pass before the 1st engagement, both players hiding their actions, carefully using terrain making sure that the advancement is not noticed.

Imagine: your tanks snuck up to the enemy lines with out being noticed, but all of a sudden an anty-tank cannons fire - 5 of your tanks lay in a pile a burning wreckage... But then you open your hand - the tanks were a decoy - the real assault are the large collection of planes quietly circling above your base... The opponent thinking he took care of your main forces and is on the move attacking the unprotected flank - your planes make a run for it - shooting across the map toward the base... AA Fires hidden in the forest, but you got enough bombers to take a few casualties. Opponents base is no more, but he pushes further on the unprotected flank only to be picked off by the planes one by one - this for you is RUSE.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE ART OF REAL-TIME S.T.R.A.T.E.G.Y., September 16, 2010
By
NeuroSplicer (Freeside, in geosynchronous orbit) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: R.U.S.E. (DVD-ROM)
The RTS genre had become pretty much saturated for some time now. The addition of more on-screen units and richer environments (with the consequent increase in hardware requirements) did little to invigorate it. In RUSE, although you will recognize several classic RTS components, they are skillfully combined together and blended with a number of new ideas so that the end result seems fresh and innovative.

To say that RUSE was over-hyped would be an understatement. Nevertheless, it is one of the rare games that manages to live up to its hype and deliver hours of solid fun and enthusiastic immersion.

Strategic placement of your units will determine their line of sight and their range - but also their vulnerability to enemy units. Concealment and ambush are essential parts of the gameplay. For a game that presents units as oversized board-game tokens when zoomed out, battlefield realism is kept high with vehicles permitted to move only on roads (and thus cannot claim the advantage of higher ground) and nested units having to either be pummeled with artillery or circumvented in order to advance. Unlike tactical decisions, resource gathering has been simplified and kept to a minimum.

However, the real strength of RUSE lies elsewhere. What you will enjoy the most are, well, the...ruses. Whether you create a spectral decoy army that will divert the enemy or ask Bletchley Park to break his communication codes for you to be waiting for his units at the right location, those battlefield ruses are what make this game so great and immensely replayable.

Now, the good news is that UBISOFT has finally abandoned the idiotic DRM used in their latest games which required an always-on connection to their servers to play your game. The bad news is this game comes with mandatory OnLine STEAM activation, which makes it a piece of rentware it never becomes yours. This is what prevented me from giving this game a 5th star. Whether this bothers you or not, you can now make an informed decision.

RECOMMENDED.

5.0 out of 5 stars great game and easy download, April 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
One of the best strategy games I have played. I have not played much online yet, but I have loved playing against AI. The campaign is nothing great, but you dont buy this game for the campaign. You buy this game for online play or with friends via lan. Easy download with no hiccups. Very pleased with game and purchase.
