If you don't know about the Patagonia R4, I'm sorry because you have been missing out. I was introduced to "Patagucci" many years ago and hundreds, possibly thousands, of dollars later I am still going back for more.

The R4 is our family's essential go-to jacket in the winter. Winters in MN are long and cold, with windchills sometimes dipping into the -30's. It blocks the wind and keeps the warm in. If you take care of this jacket, it will last you a long time and you definitely will get more than your money's worth out of it. I have had my R4 for five winters, my husband has had his for three, and we just got our daughter her first R4 for Xmas last year. My husband will layer a shell over the top when he's out snowblowing and he comes back in the house sweaty.

The sizing runs true in these, but if you plan to layer bulky underneath then you may want to size up. The women's cut is more flattering than many boxy winter coats. I'm 5'8" and 145 and the L fits nicely over the top of my winter sweaters. My daughter is 5'10" and 170 and she also fits into the L.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best fleece I've ever purchased, April 5, 2011

I bought this fleece for my wife, since she needed something warmer than her R4 lightweight after our move to Tennessee. I've owned the men's version of the fleece for about 5 years, and both of us agree that it is hands down the best fleece we've ever used.

I own TNF, Mountain Hardwear, REI, and Marmot fleeces and jackets, but the R4 is my favorite. Warm and windproof, it is an incredibly good insulating layer for its weight. If you live in a warm area, you should consider the R4 lightweight, or the R2/R3, but if it ever gets cold where you live, this is the fleece you want to buy.
