Editorial Reviews

Product Description

During the Falklands war Jerry Pook, a pilot in No. 1(F) Squadron RAF, flew air interdiction, armed reccon, close-air-support and airfield attack as well as pure photo-reccon missions. Most weapons were delivered from extreme low-level attacks because of the lack of navigation aids and in the absence of Smart weapons. The only way he could achieve results was to get low down and close-in to the targets and, if necessary, carry out re-attacks to destroy high-value targets. Apart from brief carrier trials carried out many years previously there had been no RAF Harriers deployed at sea. The RAF pilots were treated with ill-disguised contempt by their naval masters, their professional opinions ignored in spite of the fact that the RN knew next to nothing about ground-attack and reccon operations. Very soon after starting operations from the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes the squadron realized that they were considered as more or less expendable ordnance. The Harriers lacked the most basic self-protection aids and were up against 10,000 well-armed troops who put up an impressive weight of fire whenever attacked.

4.0 out of 5 stars R.A.F. Ground attack Falklands, December 7, 2007
By Michael B. Parr (Victoria B.C.) - See all my reviews

This book is an interesting read for those with a passion for Jet Combat, the Falklands war and the inner workings of the modern military. It is unique in that a member of the airforce comes under the command of the Navy with perhaps typical tension and frustration. The tactics of air combat in the early 80's, set in a unusual environment make this book enjoyable to anyone who loves stories about fast jets!

5.0 out of 5 stars RAF Harrier GROUND Attack Falklands, October 11, 2008

I loved every ward of it!. Jerry Pook pots you in the action, you are on bord HMS Hermes and in the cockpit of the RAF GR3 Harrier. The 38 photos go well with the action.

5.0 out of 5 stars a MUST for all aviation/war enthusiasts, August 24, 2009
By Ding Ding "evil scholar" (Shanghai, P.R. China) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A little expensive at over $30 for a book of ~250 pages, yes, but a few pages in I became convinced that the book is well worth the prize. The author is one of a rare breed of people who 'been there','done it' and refuses to waste readers' time with politically-correct remarks designed to please everyone. The book covers the crucial contribution of RAF Harriers in the war, a part apparently not well known because of the contempt of RN towards RAF. If you are interested in the Falklands War, aviation technology, ground attack tactics(the book does contains some interesting technical content on stuff like low-level single seat flying and bombing techniques)or just dying for a story from a sincere, professional and passionate man then buy this book now.
