Great gift for others of that generation,

Aloysius has painted quite a picture - opressive poverty yet a loving supportive family. By stringing together his vingettes, he has been able to convey both humor and history. I found this book fascinating and entertaining. I have loaned out the one I bought for myself and have purchased two more to give as gifts. You won't go wrong giving this to anyone who grew up through the same era, although I am still in my 40's and enjoyed it immensely.

A great memory of the past!,
This review is from: FROM RAGS TO PATCHES: Growing Up in Boston During the Great Depression (Paperback)
Al Ahearn has written an engaging memoir of his young life growing up in Boston during the Great Depression. The writing is crisp and clear. His style is to tell short stories. When they are all put together, they provide a clear picture of how difficult thoes times were, but also how his family managed to overcome the adversities facing them.
For anyone who wants to know more about life during the 1930's this is a great source document. For those of us old enough to remember what it was like back then, much of what Al writes about is like going down memory lane.

Everyone who came from or whose parents came from the Canadian maritimes to "The Boston States" will love this book. The stories by Aloysius of life in the depression will bring tears to the eyes of all of his contempories. The children of all who grew up in those days will get a better picture of they days some parents didn't talk about very much. |
