Secure mount for the Nuvi 500,

This review is from: RAM Mounting Systems RAM-HOL-GA32U Plastic Cradle for Garmin Nuvi 500 and 550 (Electronics)
This mount fits the Nuvi 500 like a glove - holding it very secure. RAM devices are heavy duty and well made. My only quibble with this mount is it almost secures too well, making it difficult to remove my Nuvi from its grasp without fear of scratching the Nuvi housing. This caused me to give a 4-star rather than a 5 star rating.

The mount fits the Nuvi 500 like a glove. I have no worries about the GPS coming out even with bad bumps in the road. It came with three different length bolts for attaching. I attached mine to a generic mounting plate and put it on my motorcycle. The only potential issue I see is that it catches slightly on the seam of the GPS plastic on top. It is not bad and with a little care it's not an issue at all. With time (or a small file) it might not be an issue at all.
Overall it's a solid mount for a good price.

I like the holder, but it does NOT come with a RAM mount ball on the back side. A photo of the back would clarify that. Also, you cannot insert or remove the GPS unit with the power cord attached. This is a problem depending on how tight things are behind your RAM mount location.

RAM-MOUNT should be ashamed. As noted by another reviewer, there is no diamond mounting plate with this cradle. I thought that certainly they'd have something in the instructions on where to obtain a proper mounting plate. Nope, there not only isn't anything in the instructions telling you where to get the diamond mounting plates, there are no instructions at all........
So, there is a link to a web site on the package. I went there and searched for a female ball receptacle diamond mounting plate. It returned about 3,000 entries..... None of the first 20 pages contained what I needed. So, now I have an email in to their tech support. This is really stupid marketing. I have a Garmin GPS, so I'll stick with their stuff from now on and if I don't get an immediate, satisfactory response from RAM, I'm returning this thing, because it's worthless as it is.... UPDATE: I received email from RAM, indicating that I should buy their suction cup mount to affix to the cradle.... I guess that they don't want to say that their stuff isn't compatible with a Garmin mount. I also received an email from another vendor whom I had asked for help on this matter. They specifically stated that Garmin mounts and cradles are not compatible with RAM mounts and cradles, because they use different sized balls and mounting patterns. Now, why couldn't RAM have put that here for people looking to buy a new cradle? |
