4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Emergencies
These are the perfect flashlights to have for emergencies. 1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless gimmick product
Got a set of these lights as a gift. Like most gimmick products, these lights are worthless. They worked a little when we first had them, and even then they gave off a very dim light that didn't last very long. Now after 8 months, they don't work at all no matter how long you shake them. Worthless, we just threw them in the trash 5 minutes ago.

I bought some of this and not satisfied any. The light come out very weak, you will get tired soon with shaking it.
Better to buy the wind-up type, it will have stronger light and save your energy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Emergencies, January 24, 2009

These are the perfect flashlights to have for emergencies. You never need to worry about having fresh batteries on hand or forgetting to change the batteries only to find out that the batteries leaked and ruined your flashlight. These Faraday Lights never need batteries. All you have to do is shake them for a couple of minutes to charge 'em up. Another big plus is that it uses an LED so there are no light bulbs to replace.

While the larger flashlight is waterproof, the small one is not. Also, the small one only has a momentary push button switch. You must keep pressing the button to keep it lit. The larger flashlight has a push on/push off switch.

Granted, the light output is not nearly as bright as a traditional flashlight, but it's bright enough to light your way through a darkened room so that you won't be stubbing your toes or tripping over anything.

I used to have a battery powered flashlight in my car but I would never remember to replace the batteries. One day when I really needed it, the batteries were dead and I was out of luck. Now I keep one of these Faraday Lights in my car and I know I'll always have a light.

When buying a shake light, beware of cheap knockoffs. There are some shake lights out there that are fakes. The fake shake lights are made to look like the real thing but in reality they're powered by button cell batteries. The wire coil is in fact not connected to anything and instead of having a sliding magnet, it's just a plain non-magnetic metal slug.

Sometimes even a retailer may be unaware that the shake lights they're selling are fakes. So the best way to avoid buying a fake is to buy one made by a reputable manufacturer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shake Light pair, May 1, 2011

The larger light is waterproof, whereas the smaller one is not.
Also, the small light requires constant pressure on the finger switch.
The large one has a more conventional toggle switch to turn it on-off.
Overall, it is a great idea to be able to generate an emergency light
without batteries. However, these Faraday effect lights only give rather
dim lighting (via a single LED). The charge is short-lived. For more
intense lighting, one might consider the crank-operated emergency lights.

2.0 out of 5 stars poor quality, January 15, 2011

I don't like these flashlight because the light quality is poor. The small one has to have your finger on the button to work. I was hoping to give my child the small one but she can't keep the button pushed in so it's horrible for her. You can barely see the light it gives off.

I got these for my dad who had asked for them. You have to shake a lot and the light doesn't get as bright as regular flashlights but as he pointed out - the point is to have light without worrying whether the batteries are good or bad and they are plenty bright to work in a pinch (which it the point to them :-)

I bought two of these and they work very well. The lights are reasonable and good for emergencies where you don't have batteries. The larger light does seem to work a little better then the smaller one.

However, when you first use them or when you use them after a long time in storage, you have to shake them for a good solid 5 minutes to get any decent light out of them because the capacitor in them completely drains in storage, even for a week. After that, you have to shake them for 2-4 minutes to get 1-2 minutes of light out of them.

They are great products, but I'm giving them 3 stars for being very inconvenient. Most people will find them novel at first, but get tired of shaking them after a short while. Save your money and get something better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very bright, January 23, 2010

It was definitely important to follow the directions and fully shake the lights for at least 2 minutes before the first use but even after doing that, the light put out by these flashlights isn't very bright. My husband says they still work (they were a present for him) but they are nowhere near the brightness of, say the new LED lights.

I had hoped this product would be as good as it is described. I tried it several times following the directions to a T. Then I tried it again a week later. It does not hold a charge. It is not very bright. You would wear yourself out shaking it before you would get much use out of it. Amazing idea, but not an amazing product.
