Find the right antenna for your area
Digital TV signals require better reception than analog TV signals to provide satisfactory performance (i.e. a watchable picture).  If you used to get a snowy (but watchable) picture on your analog TV channels, you may find that your new digital channels do not have strong enough signals to display in this new format.  Whether you live in the trees, on the plains, or in the midst of hills, make sure you find the right antenna for your individual needs.

I will concede however that reception of digital channels is a problem because of the generally weak signals.
EdMaslo
When I did a channel scan, it predictably picked up only the strongest stations and dropped a number of stations that the other antennae had already detected.

After installing this antenna, I got FEWER stations and POORER reception than I had been getting with my RCA "rabbit ears"-style antenna.

I received this antenna as a Christmas present and quickly tested it, amplified and non-amplifed, against existing antennae/converter/hdtv combinations around the house. I was shockingly disappointed and like another reviewer found that it did not outperform simple rabbit ears. I swapped the antenna for existing antennae in five different locations, four of which are using rabbit ears or combination rabbit ears w/loops and one using an Eagle Aspen DTV2UHF 2-bay antenna (a clone of the DB2). The RCA had trouble receiving channels that the other antennae had already received and were stored by the boxes or the TVs. When I did a channel scan, it predictably picked up only the strongest stations and dropped a number of stations that the other antennae had already detected. Another gripe I have with this antenna is that it uses a very stiff, thick coaxial cable (approx. ¼" in diameter) to connect to the TV (or the supplied amplifier, which also uses this very stiff, thick cable). This cable is so thick and stiff that it can affect the directionality and stability of the flat and lightweight antenna. The cable comes out of the middle of one side of the rectangular antenna, somewhat perpendicular to the plane of the antenna (the flat surface). The antenna may be lain flat (if the cable doesn't get in the way), or stood up using a thick u-shaped metal stand which fits into the back of the antenna on the same end where the cable is attached. Depending on how you position the antenna, the stand and the cable can interfere with each other, a minor nuisance. All in all, it looks like this is one gift that will be going back.

After installing this antenna, I got FEWER stations and POORER reception than I had been getting with my RCA "rabbit ears"-style antenna. This is going back in the box and back to the retailer that I purchased it from.

If you have a standard definition TV (i.e. NOT an HDTV), then just keep your rabbit ears or shop for a different antenna. This antenna is NOT an upgrade over rabbit ears for pulling in digital TV signals for a standard definition TV.

This product performs as advertised. It was able to pull in at least 4 digital stations from the Triad area of NC for a while when the weather changed the other day. However, they faded and went away. I do not blame this on the antenna or even on the ATSC/8VSB system as the stations are more than 100 miles away! I live in Boone, NC and I live in a bit of a hole so the reception characteristics of my location are not good to say the least. Also, unlike other areas of Western NC the TV stations that officially service this area (Charlotte also 100 miles away) have never seen fit to install translators up here in Boone (population 15,000 plus a university). Anyway, most other areas of Western NC receive signals from translators if they do not get the main signals from the Asheville/Greenville stations. Charlotte stations have curiously never done this for the northern mountain/high country region of Northwestern NC. This product DOES work better than the RCA clumsy, cumbersome rabbit ear and UHF loop I was using before and also the amplifier though not as powerful is some is a low noise amplifier as advertised. I still get one "mom and pop" TV station which is a local station but not affiliated with a network and one analog translator for UNCTV (which is the only translator in boone and it will soon be digital). So it performs at least as well or better on those two channels as my old clumsy rabbit ear/UHF antenna. Don't expect miracles from it but its actually a pretty good product. In case you are wondering, no I will not pay Charter their exorbitant fees for cable and where I live is blocked from satellite reception due to a hill and trees. Also, I live in an apartment complex so there is no way to install on outdoor antenna in a high place.

In-door antennas are very subjective, depending on the house location (mine in Irvine CA), the room, where you can place the antenna (you can't always place the antenna at its optimum location), and so on. This explains why a wide range of reviews here - from 5 (great) to 1 (junk), and not only on this antenna. Therefore, I believe there is no other way but take them home, try them out, and bring them back if they don't work for you. I've tested about 10 different antennas mostly from the local sellers. This RCA one makes the bottom of the four that work best for me. The others are Phillips SDV2740/27, Terk HDTVa, and Winegard SS3000.

The form factor of this antenna is very nice. That alone would rate it a 5 stars. However, the performance and the location where its performs best for me (very strange location) makes this feature a wash.

With this antenna, in the best case, I receive about 2/3 the number of channels "antennaweb" estimates I should get with an outdoor antenna. The other antennas give me all channels on the "antennaweb list" except one, plus a few more that are not on that list. The quality of most of the analog channels received by this antenna are just so-so, but their equivalent digital ones, are great (could be my imagination but they seem even better than cable!), when I can get them. I could never get channel 2 (CBS) and 18(KSCI) with this antenna anywhere in my house. The HD channels for 5 (KTLA), 7 (KABC), 9 (KCAL), and 11 (KTTV) are extremely sensitive (Adding or removing an 1 inch-thick book underneath this antenna make them come and go). The rest of the channels come and go as I move the antenna around the room/house.

The weird thing is the location where this antenna best performs.
