The DRC310N offers a wealth of great playback features from a range of digital media--including DVD, of course, but that's easy to overlook in the tide of other formats and conveniences. Progressive scanning from component-video outputs gives you top-of-the-line video quality with high-definition or HD-ready TVs, while the player's Digital PhotoView feature lets you enjoy a custom slideshow of digital photos when using JPEG-encoded CD-Rs or CD-RWs. The unit is also compatible with DVD-Video, VCD/SVCD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, audio CD, and MP3/WMA-encoded discs, to the point of letting you listen to MP3s while viewing digital photos from the same disc.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DRC310N stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The component-video outs are switchable from 480p to 480i for compatible non-HD sets, and composite- and S-video outputs maximize compatibility with nearly any television.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions, and the player passes both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals through its digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: 3D Virtual Surround simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on your TV).

Playback options include MultiSpeed Smooth Scan (forward and reverse, up to 100x playback), MultiSpeed Slow Motion (forward and reverse), bookmarking (up to six), repeat, resume, random play, and track programming (see technical specifications for details). Supplied accessories include a multibrand remote control that operates the DVD player and RCA and GE televisions.

I'm real picky when it comes to buying electronic equipment, because there are so many pieces of junk out there you never can be sure what you're going to get. That's why for me I like to stick with well established name-brands, like Zenith, GE, and RCA; these companies were making televisions before I was born - and that's a long time!

I already had a nice RCA 27" television and so I wanted to find a complimentary DVD player to go with it. I found the RCA DRC310N Progressive-Scan Slot-Load DVD Player at my local Radio Shack (for around $80). I was impressed immediately with the front slot-loading, since this has no openings in the front of the machine (the slot is barely wider than a CD and is protected by a rubber sleeve) or a large drawer that opens. This means less chance of dust getting into the unit, which appealed to my anal-retentive nature.

Also, the picture quality is superb. Although the unit has only a couple display settings I found this only mildly disappointing since the picture is so good: sharp crisp letters on black and blue backgrounds with no "dancing" or distortion.

I love the remote control that comes with this unit. It has the ability to run TV/VCR/DVD and is capatible with most GE & RCA components, which I love because both my TV and VCR are RCA models as well.

For the price this is one sleek DVD player. I also recommend buying some quality audio and S-Video cables (or you can get the progressive scan cables if that's what you prefer).

I bought this DVD player about 2 weeks ago and I'am very satisfied with it. The picture quality is superb, especially in progressive scan mode. I would highly recommend this DVD player to anyone looking to get the most out of their HD capable T,V's!
