RCA DRC6272 Twin Mobile DVD Players - play two different DVDs!

My wife and I really shopped around for a DVD player for our car. We took a chance with this one because there was no reviews on it. I have to say that chance really paid off for us. Here is why we decided to go with this one:

1. Brand recognition. We could have went with a couple other names, but I have known RCA for being decent. Maybe not the best but good enough for me.

2. Remote controls. This is the number one reason why we went with this one. The first one we had didn't come with remotes and we found it to be a real pain if you have to skip sections, stop, play, and all other normal functions you would use with a DVD player. Because we don't want the kids to get out of their seats while driving this is really ideal and highly recomended. Our children are also too young to understand the controls. The different colors make it easy to determine which control works for what player.

3. Two independent players or able to view the same movie on both. The original one we purchased only had one player. With two kids you never know what they are going to watch. This solves the problem when they both want to watch different things. The other reason is for back-up purposes. I have read in many reviews that the dvd player breaks after a while...well with two, if one goes down during a long drive, your not at a complete loss because you can use the other.

The one con with this player is the fact that it doesn't remember where the DVD left off if your in the middle of a movie and you shut your car off. This may bother some people but the fact is on long drives your not going to stop every half hour...more like every two or three hours. The average movie is around two hours so it's unlikely this is going to be a major problem during those drives. Unless you plan to use the DVD player for every little drive, this really isn't that big of a deal.

Other than that this DVD player is perfect for what we intend to use it for.

I was in the market for something to entertain my small kids on drives, particularly during our long daily commute to work (where their daycare is located). This appeared to fit the bill. Indeed it did do the job, but it could be a lot better.

PROs:
- The system was very easy to set up. So long as you aren't worried about hiding cords, it only really takes minutes to get this up and working.
- The system is relatively easy to operate. You can have both screens showing the same movie, or each watching something different. Switching between the two settings is very easy.
- The picture and sound were adequate for our sedan.
- We never had a reliability problem.

CONs:
- Many people will be buying this for small children. If your kids are too little to be trusted with operating the unit themselves, the system doesn't work well. For one, as mentioned in other reviews, everytime you stop the car (even if you leave the key in the aux position) the movie completely restarts when you restart the car. This becomes a problem when the person in the front seat (not the kids in back) has to wade through the menu and get the movie back to where it was (supremely frustrating if you're dealing with a Disney movie... parents, you know what I'm talking about). Equally frustrating is that, while the system comes with remotes, you must be directly in line with the sensor to get them to work. In other words, only the kids in the back can really get the remote to work. In our case, that won't work because the kids are too little to figure out the remote buttons. Bottom line you end up reaching behind the headrest from the passenger seat and trying to hit buttons without being able to see them or what's on the screen. There is no tactile indicator on the buttons to let you know which is which by feel, so you really have to go off of experience. There is also no 'menu' button on the unit. It only exists on the remotes. The front seat occupants will NOT be able to get the remote to work while remaining seatbelted in the front... no matter how much yoga you practice.
- The unit's cord are hard to hide in order to give you a clean look. The way they plug in makes the unit easy to set up but also hard to make look clean. Also, my two year old son liked to kick the cords out of the monitor with his feet.
- The headrest strap is really just one long strip of velcro strap. It works but it doesn't make for an overly secure fit. Also if you have tapered headrests, you'll find it hard to get it to work great. We had to loop it around the metal headrest posts instead of the actual headrest.
- As I mentioned previously, the unit is easy to install. It isn't SO easy to install that you'll want to take it down and put it away every time you get out of the car. That would just be too much of a hassle. On the other hand, it is easy enough to get out of the car quickly to be enticing to a thief. That is exactly what happened to us. The first time we forgot to lock the car (after having this for about 1.5 years), it was gone in a heartbeat.

We are now looking for a replacement unit and will probably NOT get another RCA. We need a system that is easier to operate from the front seat. If your back seat passengers are old enough to operate this independantly and you don't make frequent stops, this unit should work for you just fine and is very cost effective.

If anyone knows of a similar dvd system that remembers where in the movie it left off when you turn off the car, please let me know via the comments here.

I had no problem with setting up the RCA cables to each other. or mounting it to the back of the head rest. It was very easy to use. Best of all remotes are NOT interchangeable!The remotes are color coded to their prospective dvd player. So during a trip you will not hear .... Dad! He keeps messing up my movie. And as long as you have power to the players it will remember where the movie was last stopped. Cannot say enough how fantastic the picture and sound is. I'm so glad I got it for our 16hr round trip to Rhode Island. Never knew the kids where there. :).

The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because one of my players won't read any discs. I believe the lens is messed up on it. It will however play the movie that we have going on the other player if we hook it up. I will be returning it for an exchange. I definitely want these for my kids. It wouldn't be a huge issue but my kids are a few years apart so whereas my little one enjoys VeggieTales and Winnie the Pooh, my oldest one much prefers Cars or How to Train Your Dragon. The same movie just doesn't keep both attentions. The sound and picture are clear. It remembers where it left off at in a movie even if I take the DVD completely out and put it back in. And I love that it has color coded remotes so you know which player the remote goes to. The only complaint I have (other than one of them being defective) is that they have to be plugged in to work. I wish they had an internal battery so that we could lessen the hassle of cords but we can work around the cords. If it just hadn't been for that one issue, I would give this 5 stars all the way. I definitely recommend these to anyone who has little ones to entertain going down the road. We travel quite a bit and these make life so much easier.
UPDATE (11/30/10): Contacted Amazon about issue and had a replacement sent. It only took 2 days for my new DVD players to arrive and they work beautifully. I couldn't be happier. The fact that I didn't have to pay for return shipping on the faulty players made it even better. All I had to do was print out the return label, put it on the box and give it to the UPS guy. Thanks Amazon! Now I can say without a doubt that this product gets 5 stars.

I was a little skeptical on buying these due to a few reviews I saw. However I received them fast and am completely satisfied! We needed something with a remote first off and it was hard finding a dual set that had one. I saw these and was very impressed. TWO remotes, the screens can play the same movie on both OR separate movies on each screen!!! Both screens have their own remotes so there is no confusing them. Also you could put them in separate vehicles!! CRYSTAL CLEAR PICTURE, GREAT sound quality, easy to use and set up. I LOVE the fact that it came with 2 power adapters for the car. one that is a single cord for one screen and the other is a dual so it can power both screens at the same time. Due to the fact that we have one child forward facing and one rear facing these come in handy since we have to have both screens plugged in separately so that the cords reach where needed. The way that they open to put the discs in is very nice. simple button on top and the screen opens forward. The skip protection on them is wonderful as well. We we're in the middle of our trip to MI to visit family - just me, my two girls and our two dogs - and we were getting ready to head back to VA. So having GOOD dvd players to replace the ones we had that died was a MUST! and they HAD to have remotes since I could reach back and start/stop/adjust the movie while driving that far. Overall I would HIGHLY recommend these to anyone!! Great price, great customer service and wonderful product!!

We purchased the same units but a different screen size from Sams Club last year. These were everything we were looking for. We wanted an additional set for the other car.


Each unit will play its own DVD or you can hook one unit to the other and play the same DVD on each other(Cables are even included). We have to kids and sometimes they want to watch the same thing and sometimes they dont. It is a quick flip of a switch that I can do while driving and I can swap modes. They come with 2 remotes that are color coded for each screen (One blue remote for the unit with blue and a green remote for the green unit).

There is nothing that I do not like about these units. They can be used stand alone, together, put in two different cars, used inside with AC adapter (included), remotes can be used from the front seat or my 4 year old can do it himself. Assuming these units hold up as long as the old ones have I can see no downfalls. We have had them for 2 months already and not a single problem.

We're very happy with our purchase. We bought this item before a long road trip, and are pleasantly surprised at the quality. An even greater feature is that the DVD player comes with plugs so you can connect it to your home TV, hotel TV, whatever, and watch it almost anywhere. While at Grandmas house we can now put him on the floor and he has his own little TV, and does not monopolize ours. :-)

I love the remote controls, only wish they also controlled the volume. Only other downside is you can't merely run it off of battery power- it has to be plugged in. Very happy with this purchase though, and would recommend it.

These Dvd players are very nice with all of its accessories. The fact that it plays different movies on both players and can play the same movie on both screens with the flip of a switch is extra nice. the car adapter that splits into both dvd player is very nice..it straps on very easy to the back of the head rest. So far I feel like this was a good buy. time will tell if I run into some of the problems other reviewers have ran into. I would purchase this item again. UPDATE: The volume of this player is LOW!!!you will need to buy a headphone amp for this item if you want to hear it while driving in the car with the radio on or any other outside noises. Amazon have some 4 channel headphone amp starting at $21.00. I also am hearing a disturbing popping like sound when the players are hook up by the house power supply. I was almost ready to send this item back based on that.The car adapter works well without the popping sound only if I connect it to an inverter box with the cigerette lighter adapter...other than that I hear a loud whinning sound.The buttons are small and CLOSE together on the top of the dvd player. There is no menu button on the player So you will need to use the remote. The screen gets smudged by the littlest touch. you will neeed some kind of screen cleaner. the picture is kind of dark but you can lighten it up in video mode.
I know it sound like a good review gone bad lol. I really want to love this item but as of now I guess I am just hoping I have found the things I do not like and a way to improve those things so I can love this item.I do not think I'll rush out to buy another set...lol

These worked great for a trip from Cali. to Michigan. Love that both players play different movies. Volume works great as some systems are too quiet without headphones. I have had no problems with either of them. Nice crisp pictures.

My husband and I purchased these before a 10 1/2 hour trip with our kids. The kids watched these for a good portion of the drive, and they worked wonderfully! They come with a dual power cord to provide power to both dvd players at the same time so it was very convenient to use. My son was able to work the remotes for both players since our youngest doesn't understand how to use them yet. We love these dvd players! I would recommend them to anyone with kids!
