The DRD450RG uses digital compression to provide sharp, clear images and Dolby Digital sound to deliver immersive, six-channel surround sound when the DIRECTV receiver is connected via optical cable to a compatible audio-video receiver. With this system, you can even enjoy DIRECTV programming in two locations in the home, without the need for a second satellite dish.

DIRECTV interactive television service lets you use the included remote to access up-to-the-minute news, sports, financial information, weather, program trivia, and free offers--as well as shop--all while watching TV. An accelerated 32-bit processor grants immediate access to all interactive programming features. The advanced program guide stores up to seven days of information and lets you search the entire channel guide while viewing an active channel in the picture window. The guide also provides channel and program title information for seven channels covering up to a two-hour time window. In addition, the receiver offers caller ID display capability, one-button record, and two sets of audio-video outputs, making this DIRECTV receiver the ultimate in convenience. (To use caller ID, a receiver must be directly plugged into a telephone outlet--not a wireless phone jack--and you must subscribe to a caller ID or similar caller-identification service.)

There are some terms and conditions with the purchase of this product. There is a limit of one DIRECTV system purchase and installation per customer. Only new residential DIRECTV customers may purchase a system. Buying this item signifies agreement to sign up for one year of DIRECTV programming. receivers must be activated within 45 days by calling (800) DIRECTV [[phone]]. Failure to activate service (or canceling service within one year of subscribing) may result in a $250 charge to the credit card used for the purchase. All returned systems and receivers will be inspected for original parts and access cards. If a receiver is returned without its access card, a $125 restocking fee may be charged to the credit card used for the purchase.

I purchased this receiver about 2 weeks ago for the optical output. Everything works great until you receive a signal encoded in Dolby Digital. The audio periodically cuts out.

We are pleased generally with the quality of the RCA 450 DSS receiver, but there are a few problems that may or may not be unique to the particular box in our house.

Good: excellent picture and sound quality.

Weak: (1) unit spontaneously resets on occasion, requiring a lengthy download; (2) channel with hinky sound transmission may corrupt ALL sound, requiring a manual reset; (3) program guide is inconsistent--it seems to provide more information at certain times of day that at others!

These are all minor issues, however, and experiencing a broadcast in Dolby Digital sound makes everything seem perfect.

I purchased this receiver as a replacement. I recently upgraded the wiring in my house so that I would have the capability to watch Directv from other rooms. Anyway, the manual for this device indicates that you can use an RF remote with it. The on-screen guide for this device indicates that you can use an RF remote with it and that there is a place in the back to plug in the remote antenna that was (NOT) supplied with the device. I have been trying to get clarification from RCA support on this issue. Either they do not read the messages or they do not comprehend English. The four messages that I have sent them have generated responses for everything except an answer to my question. If you plan to use this receiver with the supplied remote and don't ever plan to expand your use then you can consider this, but don't use this receiver for anything beyond standard use (and don't count on assistance from RCA support).
