Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Control as many as eight devices through a single remote with this RCA learning model. The value of a learning remote is obvious: it lets you enjoy many of the functions of your existing remotes, including less common functions, so you don't have to repeatedly pull the old remote out of storage. To use the learning function, simply point the RCA remote at the old remote from a distance of roughly 2 inches, press the code search button until it lights up, and then assign up to 40 favorite functions from each remote. The remote can learn such functions as picture-in-picture, video switching, and a host of other choices, and then assign them to the easy-to-use touchscreen display.

Even without the learning capability, the remote still controls the primary functions of most brands of TVs, VCRs, DVD players, CD players, cable boxes, satellite receivers, and radios. The unit works by turning the touchscreen into a "virtual keypad" that accommodates whichever device you select. Once you've selected the device, you'll have access to a pair of control screens with 18 positional keys each, which should provide enough functionality for almost any product. To switch between the control screens, merely press the Screen key in the upper right-hand corner. The screen is also backlit, making it easy to see even in the midst of watching an intense movie with the lights off.

The remote also includes an extensive code library with a code search button, which scans through a variety of codes for the most popular electronics brands to make programming easy. To help users get started right out of the box, the remote is preprogrammed for use with several RCA devices, including TVs, CD players, and more. Additional features include a macro function that lets you control multiple commands with a single keystroke; a flat cabinet bottom that's ideal for tabletop operation; a sleep timer; and the ability to custom label specific touchscreen keys. The remote measures 2.1 inches wide and 12 inches tall and carries a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.

4.0 out of 5 stars RCA is starting to get the hang of it, August 8, 2003

This review is from: RCA RCU900 8-Device LCD Touch Screen Learning Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
Having owned a previous, unreliable RCA remote I was intrigued by the context sensitive, touch screen capabilities of this one. First off, this remote seems to have nixed the problems of the previous RCA remote I owned (now discarded). This unit also has the ability to retain its programming during battery changes! I was wondering when someone was going to figure that one out. The remote itself is pretty straightforward to use. Although the touch screen requires several pages for some functions. For instance, the DirectTV satellite "guide" button is on the 2nd screen yet the "info" key is on the first screen. You'd thought someone would've put the two buttons on the same screen but alas they did not. So you will touch, touch and touch a few more times to do what you did in a couple of button pushes on your DirectTV remote. However, does that diminish the quality of this remote? Nope. I don't mind a couple of extra button pushes for the much easier to use interface and stability that my wife enjoys using. Gone are the days of her complaining about my 5 separate remotes (or the one not-so-stable remote). This remote also has the ability to control our AIWA muli-national VCR that supports PAL and SECAM modes. Is it the final solution? Probably not. Hopefully in a couple more iterations RCA will have it right however until that happens this is a wonderful remote.

This remote will allow you to replace most of your remotes, at least most of the time. The code system to initially program it works for most devices and the code search will probably work with all the others. There are 2 screens to handle all operations but that is not a big deal. The only problem is if there is not a button for one of the functions on your old remote you can not add it. The learning feature allows you to program a button using the old remote but remembering that you changed the input button to do something else is not the best solution and if there just aren't enough buttons on the 2 screens you can't add one. That said for the price this is a great remote that will handle almost everything you need.

I have had RCA learning universal remotes and given them as gifts, all to my satisfaction. THEN I got this one. It will NOT learn Motorola HD cable box, nor combine volume control on audio equipment with TV controls.
Whereas my components are not in the factory library, there is snome behind the scenes tie-in that prevents mixing equipmet. My old Memorex CP8 (ca. 1988) does all this well.
