1.0 out of 5 stars Automatic turnoff is a real turnoff!
I purchased these headphones a couple of months ago even after reading the negative feedback. I wish I would have listened. The headphones really do automatically cut-off when the music stops or when the audio is at a low level such as a very quite scene in a movie. There is also a constant low level hiss in the background.

I know it is tempting to buy these...

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected, February 1, 2005

I bought these mainly for use with a TV and I have no complaints. The sound quality is good, and the range is throughout my house. I can keep listening to a show if I have to take the dog outside. They are comfortable. I can easily wear them for the duration of a movie. I use rechargeable batteries, and they last over a month with about 2 hours of use per day. I also use them occasionally to listen to music and the quality is almost as good as a corded pair of headphones that I have.

There are two knobs on the right hand side. One is the volume control and the other for tuning. It takes a few days until you learn which is which. After that, you won't fiddle with the tuning when you want to adjust the volume. I have never had any interference and so never needed to adjust the tuning.

These are definitely useful when you want to keep the sound to yourself or roam about while listening to headphones. Also, voices are much easier to understand through headphones than through speakers, especially during a movie. I wouldn't mind using corded headphones except that I don't want to sit close to the TV and I want to be able to walk around occasionally.

The base unit shuts off about a minute after you turn off the source. If I mute the TV during a long set of commercials, the base shuts down and all you hear is noise. This is so that you can shut off the headphones without having to get up to shut off the base. I learned to turn down the volume on the unit instead of using the mute during long commercials.

You can either plug the base into a headphone jack or, with the adapter, into RCA plugs labeled audio out. I don't notice any difference in terms of sound quality between the two.

i bought these headphones a few days ago, and so far i have no problems with them at all. i use them to listen to music from my computer. later this week, i will be trying them with the tv. there was an irritating buzzing noise when i first started using them, but then i read the suggestion in the manual that said to place the transmitter above head level, so i put it on a shelf. they've worked perfectly since then. they've never automatically cut off on me, but maybe this is because i listen to winamp on repeat and shuffle, so it constantly plays random mp3s from a very large play list. the sound quality seems very good. these headphones are very comfortable to wear, and they stay on very securely. i haven't been able to test them in a very large area, but they work nicely while i move around my dorm. for my purposes, at least, they're perfect. i haven't found anything wrong with them yet, and i can't think of anything that would make them better.

I know it is tempting to buy these because of the cheap price, but it really is worth it to spend a little more money on a higher quality set of wireless headphones.

Have wanted to purchase a pair of wireless headphones for quite sometime but when I saw these on sale for the price, it was hard to pass up. I am very satisfied with the product and results. I can now watch TV, listen to music, in bed without disturbing my now asleep wife. I also have a small hearing problem, so I wish I would have know about these for my parents or any older folks who have lost hearing and find it difficult to hear the TV. Rather than turn the volume up sky high others can actually have a conversation without screaming. Good value for the money and would recommend to all. Very easy to set up and get started.

2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat OK..., January 19, 2005

I got these headphones for christmas, and they were great! I'd give it five stars, if it wasn't for the terrible auto-off feature that it has. I meditate alot and I like to listen to new-age streaming radio, but when the signal gets too weak or the music stops for a few seconds, the transmitter turns off, causing a horribly-loud, cacophonous static. I mean, its just horrible. Why is this even implimented? Is it to prevent people from leaving the headphones on after they've finished listening to music by giving them a horrendous screeching sound? :P

Other than that, they were excellent. Great sound, and the best thing is I can go around the house listening to music on my computer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Are these headphones or a PC modem dialing up??, May 2, 2005
This review is from: RCA WHP140 900 MHz Wireless Headphones (Electronics)
Ok, I was ecstatic when I first thought about getting wireless headphones. I mean the idea is perfect, is it not? You get to walk around your home and do anything you like while listening to anything from any source, without being tied down by wires! It's like a dream come true. So I looked online, and found this RCA model. I went out and purchased it, and I was VERY disappointed.

The reviews here all have compliments about the headphones. But I live in San Francisco, where it's very crowded and most houses are attached to one another, so there's ALOT of interference. I didn't hear any of the loud static noise everyone keeps talking about that resulted from the auto shut off feature. What I did hear was a Spanish radio station and just some static. Strange huh? As for the reception, I hooked up the phones to my stereo, played a CD, and the sound was AWFUL. I could barely hear the music with all the static. I tried using the channel wheel, which helped, but as I moved around, I had to keep turning that stupid channel wheel, which is very fustrating. I recommend that you look for models with automatic channel tuning so you won't have to deal with this.

When I did stay still and had a good signal, the sound quality wasn't very good anyways. My Sony earbuds are way more superior than these full sized headphones. It's very noticeable. The phones sounds on par with cordless telephones, but with much more static. And if you're wondering the phones can be connected to your TV, yes it can. It has an included cable that connects to the Audio Output on your TV/DVD. But I was disappointed here too. The reason I wanted to get wireless headphones were so I can use them to watch TV or movies very loudly while not disturbing anyone. I thought the phones would cut off the TV speakers, and only play the sound through the phones. But no, it played in both. And since I could barely hear any sound from the phones, I had to turn the volume up on the TV, so it got loud enough that I could hear it throughout the house. So that feature goes down the toilet.

If you really want wireless headphones, I think waiting a few years would be best. The technology will provide much better models than these, and will probably be cheaper too. The only good thing I can say about the RCA ones is that they look nice and are comfortable to wear. Mine's had a silver casing which stood out from the black models. But even that has its flaws. The base unit feels so light and weightless that you just wonder if it's doing anything at all. And sometimes one little tug would send the base falling to the ground from wherever it is.

Thank you for reading my review, and I hope you find better models out there. Good luck!

1.0 out of 5 stars "iffy" product that needs work, November 6, 2006
This review is from: RCA WHP140 900 MHz Wireless Headphones (Electronics)
These are RCA headphones? What happened to the quality products that they USED to put out? I can tell you right now, these aren't it.

Many letdowns and very few if any advantages in these earphones. Spend your money and get something else.

The first problem with these earphone is how they fit and feel on your head. Since the phones do not feature a swiveling feature like seen in most other headphone sets, you put them on your head and they feel like they're going to fall off.

You have to constantly adjust the tuning dials to achieve a constant and clear signal. The signal becomes distorted or can't be recieved at all if you go as far as an upstairs bedroom which is directly above the transmitter or anywhere in range. Other problems with reception include popping noises and static within a very short distance from the transmitter.

The automatic turn off is another feature which makes this model a poor choice. If the sound source is too low, such as a certain scene in a movie or something, the headphones will shut off within 30-60 seconds. This will usually come as a big surprise to you when the volume level changes and you hear loud static coming from the speakers which will cause most people to jump and fall out of their chair from the surprise.

The last problem with these headphones is that the battery cover is very hard to get off and back on again after replacing the batteries. Due to the way the headphones are attached so tightly to the band. You have to fight with the cover to get it up and through the band.

Save your money and go for something else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works for me, January 11, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: RCA WHP140 900 MHz Wireless Headphones (Electronics)
I use them at work and they work fine. There is a semi-constant static in the background, or sometimes a high-pitched whine, but this can usually be ignored, or you can tune away from it. I use them at work, so I don't have any problems with interference from other phones and such.

The main problem I have with them is that they squash my ears down, because the cups don't have enough padding on them. This became extremely uncomfortable after an hour or so. I modified mine with some foam rubber that I had lying around, and now they are rather more comfortable, although they look a little silly.

So, thumbs up for the price; thumbs neutral for the static; thumbs down for the ergonomic design.

I just picked these headphones up from Best Buy and I am quite satisfied with them. They don't have the acoustic or physical range like some of the more expensive models but these do exactly what they need to do in my small apartment. Like the previous reviewer, I found placing the transmitter above my head to help improve the signal and reduced all ambient static to a very slight buzz when nothing is playing, alerting me to the fact that the system is still on. Every now and then when I move, I get minor static, but it's not too distracting. Even though I've connected the system to a headphone jack, RCA provides a "Y" adapter that makes it compatible with a stereo RCA jack. The auto-power off function is a nuisance but an overlookable one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crystal clear, but must know about auto-shutoff, January 6, 2007

If you're thinking about getting these, you need to know that they automatically shutoff after 30-45 seconds if the input signal is weak. I was about to return them until I knew this. Just turn up the volume a little (it doesn't take much) on the device you're plugged in to and you won't have a problem.

Range is impressive: crystal clear audio up to about 35 feet. Still works at 50 but has a fair amount of static.

One review mentioned difficulty getting the battery cover off. I thought the same thing until I found the trick to it. You have to press in on the bottom of the cover and then slide it up (toward the top). It comes off with ease.

There's not much head room due to the intermediate strap. Depending on how you're built, you may have a problem getting the ear pieces to rest on your ears comfortably. Not a problem for kids.

Well worth it for me.
