Product Description

Baltimore high school math teacher, Maggie Olenski, feels burned out, and a resort in the mountains of western Maryland seems like the perfect get-away spot - until she stumbles on the body of a former student near the tennis courts. There's been more than one suspicious death at the Highview. Can Maggie find out who's behind it all before she becomes the next victim?

From the Inside Flap

Maggie decides she needs a break. Teaching high school geometry has her burnt out so she plans a week vacation at Highview Inn, a mountain resort in Maryland. The peaceful, idyllic surroundings are the perfect antidote and she looks forward to long days of playing tennis and swimming. But on her first day she discovers the body of a hotel employee in the woods. The young waitress was also a former student of hers and the murder disturbs Maggie in more ways than one.

Unlike most math problem she encounters, this mystery has no easy answers. As the list of suspects gets longer she finds herself distrusting everyone. With clues from the girl's diary and inquiries into her suspects' histories, Maggie moves closer to the truth. Then she learns of other puzzling "suicides" and accidental deaths in the resort's past which seem too coincidental to her. But the killer knows what she is up to and she will have to outwit this cold-blooded murderer or die trying.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Page Turner!, March 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Resort to Murder (Hardcover)
From the first page, I was "sucked" into this book. The characters were interesting and real. I found myself thinking about the characters and the story throughout my day. I couldn't wait to see what would happen to Maggie next. I really liked the fact that Maggie is a teacher - I could relate to her thinking (I'm also a teacher) as she solved the mystery. The author wrote a suspensful and thrilling mystery. You'll love it! I've told all my friends about it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Murder without Mayhem, January 3, 2001

This review is from: Resort to Murder (Hardcover)
Resort to Murder's unassuming, school-teacher sleuth loves math puzzles and tennis, and the plot bounces back to the '70s to pick up a complication or two. Author Hughes links several murders and uses a minimum of violence to enhance suspence rather than to drench readers in gore. This is just what one would hope for in a Resort; relaxation and refreshment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting plot, fun reading, January 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Resort to Murder (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed this book. It kept my interest from page one thru to the end. And the end was a surprise. I did not successfully guess the murderer and the story gets exciting near the end which makes it hard to put down. I give it a high rating for enjoyment and suspense.

More About the Author

I've always loved to write, and I also, when there was time, enjoyed dabbling in various crafts. With my Craft Corner mystery series I'm able to do both! Jo McAllister, protagonist of Wreath of Deception, String of Lies, and Paper-thin Alibi, owns an Arts and Crafts shop, and she gets to do all the fun things I've loved doing, only she does them better. But besides that she gets involved with murder -which I, happily, so far have not. Jo also lives in Maryland, as do I, but she was born there, whereas I was born and bred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which gave me a fine appreciation of snow, bratwurst, and - on occasion - beer. My first two books, Resort to Murder and A Taste of Death featured a high school math teacher. I was never a teacher, (though they are in my family), so I sent my teacher on vacations which I could then vicariously enjoy, (and no one had to come to feed the cat.) While writing my Craft Corner books, I became quite knowlegeable about all things crafty - wreath-making, scrapbooking, beading, and more. I also became fairly knowledgeable in the ways of murder. And who knows how useful that may someday be?
