Product Description

Super detailed and large 1/72 scale model kit of the famous German U-Boat ("Unterseeboot" or "Undersea Boat"), a military submarine operated by the German Navy in World War I and World War II. U-boats were highly successful in destroying Allied supply and merchant shipping in both world wars, and it wasn't until the Allies adopted the convoy system in World War II, in which merchant ships were grouped together and protected by a screen of escort vessels, that U-Boat menace was finally tamed. The German Kriegsmarine ("War Navy") further developed U-Boats in the Second World War, leading to a new generation of more technologically advanced U-Boats such as the Type VII, which was by far the most produced type. This big 1/72 scale model kit depicts the Type VIIC U-Boat, the workhorse of German U-Boat fleet. The kit features highly detailed reproduction of hull with rivets and welds, a new fin variant with "large glasshouse", Atlantic stem-post and changes to midship section of the hull faithfully reproduced, optional open or closed torpedo hatches, movable rudder and hydroplanes, retractable periscope, detailed FuMO antenna with shaft, detailed 20mm twin anti-aircraft gun on a rotary mount, detailed 37mm anti-aircraft cannon with protective shield, reproduction of 4 pressure tanks on upper deck, deflector antenna and insulators, and display stand with decals for U-Boats: U-997, U-995, U-295, U-324, U-307, U-1023, U-1002, and U-1105.

This is a finely detailed and crafted model kit from Revell. Revell in my opinion produced only mediocre kits, I always preferred Tamiya But I was pleasantly surprised in the level of detail. If you search online you will also find detail kits where you can add all the internal compartments for a very detailed "cut out" display and there are many crew kits available as well by other model makers. This model is very large, almost 40 inches so for $60 you really get a lot of model for your money. This a Level 5 of 5 on the difficulty meter even though it only has about 150 parts. If your looking for something easier try the similarly named "revell 1/72 U-Boat Type VII" from what I hear it's a much simpler kit suited for beginners but might be disappointing for advanced modelers .The Type VII C/41 is an excellent kit for the advanced modeler. Revell also offers the American GATO class Sub kit which is nearly 50 inches. Don't know about the detail or difficulty level but I'm definitely gonna try that one out as well.

Now if Revell would only make a 1/72 scale type IX U-Boat........

5.0 out of 5 stars Great kit!!, September 6, 2008

This is a modestly large plastic model kit developed by Revell. The details are well done. It is a level 5 (hard), a little challenging, but fun. My only regret is that it is 1/72 scale--I would have loved to have one at 1/48!

This kit can also be modified for R/C applications (see YouTube.com for numerous examples). Just be prepared to quadruple the price spent for the additional materials.

A fine tribute to the engineers who originally developed the type vii uboat.

Enjoy!

This item was purchased as a Christmas Gift so the only thing I can review about it is the swiftness of the transaction and shipping. I gave it plenty of time to arrive before the Holidays and didn't need the extra time!
