Great features, sub-par label quality,

I install data cabling for a living and frequently have to label patch panels - requiring multiple serialized labels of the same size. Such labels are easy to setup on the printer and you can see the entire series of labels on screen before printing, so you know exactly what you're going to end up with when you print. Unfortunately, when pausing to cut between labels, the printer advances the label to the appropriate position for cutting before starting to print the next label. The result is that each label must be manually trimmed before it can be applied.
I confirmed with Dymo/Rhino tech support that this is the way the printer is designed to work and that there are no plans to change it. In fact, I have had this printer for almost two years, and complained about this issue immediately after purchase, and they have yet to release a firmware update to correct the issue. Even the newer model 5200, released over 1 year after my original complaint, works the same way. In contrast, my Brother P-Touch 1600 supports a cut mode that cuts consecutively printed labels in the proper place, requiring only that the first label be manually trimmed. The tech support people I've talked to, as well as Dymo reps at trade shows, all understand the issue and have agreed that this is not a desirable way for the printer to work. Apparently the engineers behind the product haven't used the finished product, haven't been made aware of the issue, or don't think it's a problem. When compared to my P-Touch, the maximum print size on the same label width is smaller on the Rhino, which leaves a much larger margin above and below the text. The printing seems to be at a lower resolution than the P-Touch, but maybe it just looks that way because of the font that the Rhino uses. Finally, the finished labels, regardless of the material used (permanent polyester, vinyl, etc) have a lower quality appearance than the P-Touch TZ tapes. I think a combination of the Rhino firmware and Brother hardware would make for ultimate label printer for my needs, but that will never happen. Comparing the Rhino 6000 with the Brother P-Touch 7600, I would have a hard time deciding between the two if the prices were the same, but since the Brother comes in at about 1/2 the cost of the Rhino, I think the Brother P-Touch 7600 is the clear winner.

I have used a Brother p touch for years and clear shrink wrap to label wires etc and it has served me well. I bought this at an electronics show because it would print direct to shrink wrap and had a different variety of labels that stretched, where brightly colored etc. Also laying out patch panels and graphics seemed better. I figured it would make the job that much more professional and faster.
When it works it is great but I go through about 4x the amount of labels I should trying to get things right though and labels are $$$. I called Dymo Support twice and all they tell me is just reset the unit or exchange it where I bought it. Here are the issues I have, I am on my second unit now. - Heat shrink tubing is great, but can only print one side as oppose to all the way around and when you heat it up if you touch it before it cools it smears the inc. So be very careful with the heat gun not to touch it, this is a pain if you use the little heat distributor thingee like your suppose to in a tight area. - It says it will print XS, I wanted to label small relays etc, but every time I try to print small it just comes out with blank spots in the letters. - Tapes are inconsistent widths, for example I have 1/2 metallic tape that is really 3/8 when measured and 1/2 white that is a little bigger than 1/2". Not a big deal but looks stupid if you want to color code something and the tape width is different. - Programming on fonts needs allot of help. I have 3/4 " or 1/2" labels I tell it to print 2 lines as big as possible and I wind up with tons of white space on top and bottom. It can clearly print the next size font but that is not an option. It will not print to fill the label! Maybe they do this because of the inconsistent size of labels in any case my work around is I tell it I have a bigger label in the machine then manually set the font size. This works but of course it takes me 2 or 3 tries to get it right and wastes labels, time and money. - It seems to have trouble centering things when typing 2 lines I will wind up with my text in the top 2/3 of the label sometimes. - I have a huge case with room for maybe 6 labels in it and allot of dead space! I carry about 20 label cartage with me I wish I could fit it all in the case. - I with they included a neck strap in the big kit, I need to carry this around. The spot is there but no strap or way to carry it. For the good part Single line labels are not a problem and are consistent with this machine it. The thing feels it is built like a tank I feel most of the issues are software based except the small printing so hopefully they will fix that at some point. But for the price I may go back to my brother p-touch this is just too expensive to run given all the screw ups and time.

This is great! Print quality is only a problem on the XXS text size. Which is tiny. This is perfect for cable labels and Generic labels
