Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The native American Indians, the first pioneers, the family settlers--all who braved the emerging American West drew their very lived and fortunes from the great rivers. From the earliest days of the untamed frontier to the dawn of the twentieth century, here, in all their violence and beauty, are the Rivers West. When the rest of the west was already won . . . the mountains remained unspoiled and deadly. The men and women who tamed the savage land were tough, lawless, and, when necessary, as mean as the traps they carried--living by a private code of proud honor and swift justice. Burly, broad-shouldered Isaac Beard is the living embodiment of that mountain code. To survive, he will have to fight his way to a safe haven near Spirit Lake in the Colorado upcountry, forge an alliance with the untamed Ute Indians, and make a place where generations of Beards--and rugged, untethered, unbroken people like them--can live in peace at the headwaters of the Colorado Grand.

More About the Author

Gary McCarthy is a multiple-award winning author of fourteen American historical and thirty-four western novels published by many of New York's major publishing houses. He is well suited to writing about the American West and has a B.S. Degree in Animal Science from Cal Poly and an M.S. Degree Agricultural Economics from the University of Nevada, Reno. In 1993, his GILA RIVER published by Bantam Books won the Western Writers of America's Spur Award as the Best Historical Paperback Novel. Gary now lives in Northern Arizona and in recent years his novels have been placed in and around the Grand Canyon and often focus on the Navajo, Hualapai, Hopi and the history of Arizona. A hiker and horsemen, Gary enjoys time spent the vast and lonesome expanses he explores on the Kaibab Plateau and time spent looking for new story material. On one of those journeys to the Hualapai Reservation located on old Route 66 along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, Gary became fascinated with Hualapai stories of how,as children, they were forced to attend oftentimes distant Indian Schools. Out of this research and his friendship with the Hualapai, Gary wrote the moving story of RIVER THUNDER which, in 2009, won the Spur Award for Best Audio Book and has been published by his imprint, Canyon Country Books at www.canyoncountrybooks.com. Gary also writes an interesting column on the West titled OUR AMERICAN WEST and is now researching future historical novels set in Wyoming, California, Colorado the Navajo Reservation. He recently wrote a delightful children's Christmas story, MADDIE O'BRIEN'S CHRISTMAS DONKEYS and hopes to do more stores using the strong-willed young Maddie O'Brien as his central character.
