I bought this interface in 2011 for my Macbook Pro 15" (new generation with Thunderbolt), Pro Tools 9, Logic Pro 9, Digital Performer 7 machine.

Throughout the entire installation and configuring, I never had any problem, everything worked the first time. Software installed correctly, hardware was recognized, firmware updating went without problem, and the unit worked first time when plugged in. Generally, this interface is one of the best I've used an it's rock solid.

I use this unit in multiple environments, my home studio has a wordclock (Big Ben) and the RME connects to this perfectly with no problem and works fine. I use the lightpipe connections for digital multi i/o and they work perfect, no problems and relatively little latency upon monitoring through the software in real time.

I record myself often and absolutely can't stand any latency while monitoring a track I am currently recording. Fortunately with the FireFace UC I don't have to monitor through the recording software and I don't need any additional hardware either (patchbay or console). The software application TotalMix provides a solution. You can simply connect your headphones to the interface (or use an analog output if you have some other kind of system). In TotalMix's Matrix view, you can route an input to an output, while still enabling the input's signal to go to the software (essentially a 'mult'). This is great for monitoring while performing/recording with no latency in the monitored signal.

I only have 2 gripes. One is that I find the use of the Matrix view is confusing and time consuming to set up at times. The second is that the multipurpose knob on the front of the unit is somewhat of a pain to use, however I don't see a good alternate solution RME could have implemented.

I recommend this interface highly.

the RME FireFace uc was a huge upgrade to my little home studio, I got started in pro tools 7.4 with a mbox2 pro, wow pro tools ...what a complicated program, anyway after all was said and done I could not get the clean gain I was looking for to record guitar and a bass, hissssss was a problem, thought about the new mboxpro until reading on avid message board the horror stories there, headphone outputs not working, misleading gain range secs, ...
and with pro tools 9 could get away from avid, after much reading went with this unit, cost wise for me it was a stretch, but in the end was well worth it.
what I had read is that rme has great drivers, I have found this to be true, the built in mic pre's are the best I have ever had, and can be bypassed and used with outboard pre's so now I have room for expansion.
build quality is typical german, a pro level utilitarian look, the box is much smaller than I expected, and that works great for a home studio.

my only gripe on the fireface uc is having one knob, that you use to cycle trough different channels with a push, its not a problem with pro tools running and my control surface fired up, but just running itunes or something can be a pain, and I wish the knobs were there for at least say 4 channels...

the FireFace UC reminds me of my mac, it just works, something I don't have to fuss with, and can spend more time working on my chops...that a good thing...
very much recommended.

why 4 stars? gotta be real here. there are better interfaces out there, more i/o better a/d ,d/a ...ect but not by much. FireFace uc works for me.

I want to add that this is one of the fastest lowest latency usb interfaces built, this allows me to run my outboard firewire drive on my imac on fw800, my bottleneck is once again the cpu...
the midi performance latency wise is outstanding, important to e-drum users....
